Hey gonk
Did you have to do much adjusting with the video calibration on the BDP-83? I noticed right away when I switched out my Sony BDP S550 I had to turn down the brightness on the BDP-83 to get the display about where the Sony was. Haven't had time to run the calibration disc yet.

I think this is sill more or less in line with where this topic has gone - I have my BDP-83 running through my 990 via the 7.1 input on the 990, and on regular DVDs I am getting better sound via the BDP-83 decoding than I was previously with the 990 decoding the digital signal from my regular DVD player (both DD & DTS).
I did not expect this. I haven't done a blind test or anytthing, but on several different DVDs on my usual reference scenes - every time on the Oppo the sound seems to be a step-up than with my usual setup. Not off-the charts better, but it is consistently just a little more detailed (I've noticed it both in the front/center channels and in the surround channels).
I didn't expect this. Anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts?

So the conclusion is that the 990 has great analog potential. Actually I learned this because I run my dts-encoded 4 ch material thru a decoder and use its analog outs into the 5.1s LS-L-R-RS and listen with four up front as the material was recorded. Very happy with 990.

I didn't expect this. Anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts? My BDP-83 experience has been mainly with an Onkyo 885, but there's a note in my review about an incident in which my wife preferred the sound for CD's when listening to the BDP-83's analog output to the HDMI output (which had the benefit of bass management and Audyssey correction). She made that observation while reading and trying to ignore my testing of a CD quirk that involved switching back and forth between the two - she picked the analog sound not even knowing what I was doing. That's the point at which I realized just how good the BDP-83's analog section really is.
