How do I get more slam out of my subwoofer? I have an SVS 25-31PC+ hooked up to my outlaw. This thing used to hit me in the chest when hooked up to my Sony ES receiver. i moved it to my bedroom system because I am doing work to my house and my other system is in boxes. Anyone have any ideas? I tried setting it to LFE only and alos L/R + sub without any success. I tried playing with the gain in the sub but that doesn't work either.

Thanks

The position of the sub in the room, along with the characteristics of the room itself have a lot to do with your subwoofer experience. Try moving it around the room

I agree with garcianc2003 - the fact that you noticed a change when moving it into a different room makes me suspect that there is a room effect involved. There's an old trick for evaluating sub placement: put the sub in the listening position and them move around the room while playing a test tone until you find the location where the sub sounds loudest (quiet places in this approach are places where nulls created by the room geometry and surfaces are "eating" your low frequency sound waves).

it is not just a different room....I am also using the outlaw 990 instead of the sony es receiver. I can't put the sub on my bed and can not move my bed frown any other suggestions?

Thanks

First, some placement questions. Where in the room is the SVS currently? Are there any other positions in the room that you could use?

Next, some setup questions. Are you using similar bass management settings on the 990 as you did on the Sony? You mention using "LFE Only" and "L/R+Sub" settings on the 990, which makes me think that you have the fronts set to large. Any differences as far as teh sources being used?

i have the sub in a corner to the right of the right front speaker. I would be able to move it to the other side of the right speaker but I don't think that would enhance the bass at all. I did add the Panny BD-55 bd player to the system recently. I tried boosting the sub thru the blue ray player but that did not do the trick. Are there any other settings on the outlaw I should be playing with aside from LFE Only and L/R + Sub? My front speakers are set to large.

Thanks

What are your front speakers and have you considered running them as "small"? That might make a difference for sources that lack a .1 channel. Also, have you checked the 990's calibration with an SPL meter? The auto setup is pretty decent, but when I start running into problems I like to get a meter out and double-check settings manually.

Get a piece of plywood bigger than your sub and place it on the bed and then the sub on that. Set your speakers to small. If they are set to large I believe the 990 will send all the LFE to the L+R vice the sub. Believe it or not your sub is much more capable down low than your mains are.

Have you tried the crossover settings? If your speakers are set to small, you could have the crossovers set so low that less bass is going to your sub. If they're set to large and you haven't installed the firmware update, you might be encountering the same problem. Try cranking the crossover settings up to 100 hz and see if it has any effect. If not, it's simple to reverse.
Something else that you might check is the bass and trebel adjustment settings in the system set up menu. If bass is set low and trebel high, it could have an impact.

I am running an SVS 20-39 PC+ and sub sounds great.

As suggested I would set the fronts to small and do a manual calibration

I set the front speakers (Sonus Faber Grand Pianos) to small and it helped a bit. I have the xovers set at 40. I will play with this setting tomorrow. Thanks for the help

I would set the xover to 80 hz and see how you like it. Your mains are really only rated down to 40 HZ so why stress them at their limits.

Definitely change the crossover to at least 60. That's what I run on my fronts (SVS MTS-01's)

Sometimes it's the obvious that we overlook, have you tried reversing the phase on the sub ?

Just to address what I think was the original question, I can't imagine that a change in processor or receiver would have much of an affect on the impact of a sub. Provided that both preamps were providing a clean dynamic signal (which the 990 does) any changes that you've noted would be due entirely to the room change and placement. If everything else has remained the same..i.e source, amplifiers, speakers, cables, power, etc. This should be as easy as finding the best location for the sub in that room, setting proper phase and delay, and checking the levels with your own spl meter (I found that my 990 is sometimes a bit off with auto set up). Some rooms are easy to get this right...some are not. If you feel like you have less impact in the new room you may have a response dip in the 50-60hz range.. i notice drops in this area take away from kick drum power and the like. If this is the case....you just have to experiment to find the right spot. A tool that can help with this is the Velodyne SMS-1, assuming that you don't already have a Velodyne digital drive sub.
