speakers pop when turning off amp

Hello all, I have recently been experiencing occasional popping in my rear speakers when I turn off my amplifier. I had this problem before when I was running a passive sub off the same amp. To correct that, I removed the sub from the amp and turned the gain down all the way on that channel, problem solved. Now that the rear speakers are doing it, I am wondering if there is a problem with the amp or if I need to re-work all the interconnects and or speaker cables.
Info on my system: 990 processor parasound 1206 amp Infinity kappa 7 speakers for LCR and kappa 6 speakers in the rear.

Try shuuting it down after all the inputs are disconnected and then after you disconnect one speaker at a time to see it it is in more than one channel and whether it is a problem in the amp or the SSP. That amp doesn't have a trigger correct? It could be a dirty power switch. Do you have good ventilation on the amp? High heat can affect the longevity of any electronic component.

Thanks for the reply. Correct, there is no trigger switch and the amp is on its own shelf completely open. I will give your suggestions a try. Would it be worth a shot to shoot some cleaner into the amp and or the potentiameters (sp?) in the speakers? Thanks again, Brian

Don't spray anything into your speakers!! If you are really familiar with electronics (like its your job) you could try cleaning the power switch. Most switch contacts are self cleaning so it may be worth it to unplug the amp and just cycle the switch a bunch of times. That might do the trick. If not, I would take it to a shop which is insured to let them do the job. I don't recommend trying to do it yourself, besides the switch is likely sealed and you can't get at the contacts anyway. Since it only happens on a few of the channels it might be the power on relays for those channels that are dirty. Once again let someone who knows what they are doing check it out. Don't spray anything into the amp either, unless you really want a new amp.

Kappa, listen to XenonMan. You don't want to go spraying any kind of solvents into you amp or you will more than likely be looking for a new one. I have to go with XenonMan on this one. Take to a certified repair tech. and let them deal. Parasound has a listing of authorized service centers http://www.parasound.com/misc/us_svc.php posted here on their website. Is it really necessary to disconnect all inputs from the 990 or can I get away with just turning them off? Also, I just discovered that while adjusting the gain knobs for each channel I could hear static come across the corresponding speaker. Could it be as simple as dirty contacts? If you couldn't tell I am trying to avoid the disconnect option as much as possible, but if thats the only other option I will go for it.
I have an older adcom 555mk2 that was doing this and it was starting to have dc offset. I have yet to get that one fixed. I live in Idaho and there are not alot of good repair shops. I am hoping that the parasound is not developing the same issue. Brian

Turn the amp off and unplug it. Cycle all the gain knobs fully 10 times each. Turn it back on and see if you hear a difference. The pots are likely dirty somewhat and you need to clean them. How old is the amp? It might just be time to have it professionally cleaned. By disconnecting all of the inputs you guarantee whether it is the amp or not. In order to have it cleaned you will have to take it out anyway. Cycle all the switches and if it does not help, disconnect it and turn it on and off a few times. If that still does not help its time to send it to the shop or live with it the way it is.

The amp is 12 yrs old, I am the 2nd owner and have had it for about 3 yrs now. I will do as you suggest and work the pots and the switch. If no improvement, I will then try the disconnect and see if I can isolate it in the amp. I think I will also try to switch the rear speakers with the front speakers on the amp itself and see what happens. I appreciate your help, Brian.

It appears to be the amp. I switched the rears with the fronts, at the amp, and the pop moved to one of the front speakers while the rears sound fine. I will have to wait until I can get the wife to turn off the amp while I am by the rears to be sure but it only sounds like the pop is coming from the front now. Hopefully this will not be an expensive fix as I stated before, I already have one amp in need of repair. Brian

I would cycle the gain knobs on all the channels a bunch and see how much that helps. It is a common trait of potentiometers that if they sit in one place for alot of the time, they tend to build up some corrosion at that point. Cycling them cleans them somewhat. They are designed to be cycled frequently and stay clean that way. If it helps you may still want to get them cleaned. At 12 years old it probably needs it. I have a 32 year old integrated amp and it needs cleaned every few years.
