Can anyone post how I should set up the Panny 55k blue ray player (thru its set up menu) while using the analog outputs to the 990?

Thanks

Also....it doesn't look like the 990 is doing anything (according to the front panel). Are you guys sure the 990 takes into account speaker levels and distances?

If you are using the 7.1 Direct input and have speakers set to small, the 990 will do speaker levels, distances, and bass management. As for the other, I'll have to grab the manual and look through it - will try to do that later this evening.

I read earlier that you need to have the speakers set to large or the panny will do xovers and distance.

When using the 7.1 input should I see anything on the front panel of the 990 aside from all speaker graphics lit up and a red symbol to the right of 7.1CH DIRECT?

Yes, the speakers should be set to large on the BD55, and all distances and channel levels should be left at zero.

When you're in 7.1 Direct mode, there's no surround processing happening so there aren't as many indicators lit up as at other times - what you describe sounds right.

thanks Gonk. The system does sound dialed in. I just wanted to confirm that all was well.

It sounds like you've got it pretty well dialed in. Set the downmix to 5.1 or 7.1 (depending on how many speakers you have), all speakers to large, sub to on, and leave delays and trims to zero.

ruh roh....i keep reading that i need to adjust delays and speaker sizes in the blue ray player:

http://www.bigpicturebigsound.com/How_To...s_And_Why.shtml

Where do you see that the outlaw does this when using 7.1 analog inputs?

Thanks

That doesn't apply to the 990, as the 990 provides those adjustments for the 7.1 analog input (something that most other receivers and processors - including the 1070/970 and 950 - do not do). Keep your existing settings, as they are the right choice for the 990.

WildWolf,

There's a footnote at the bottom of that article that basically re-iterates gonk's point:
Quote:
Footnote 1: A few high-end receivers and preamp/processors do allow more control over the multi-channel analog inputs, usually by converting the incoming analog signals to digital. If your receiver or pre/pro is such a beast, then set all speakers to large in your player and set all speaker levels and delays to their default values. You'll then set these parameters in the receiver
