I have not been on the site in a while and was glad to see the much awaited soft ware update had arrived.

I read the threads related to the update and was surprised that there were not as many comments about changes that were achieved. Most were about bass management for 2 channel.

My question is to how the update affected 5.1 or 7.1 depending on your setup. I don't use the 990 for 2 channel only HT.

I will, like many of you will have to disassemble a lot of things to get to the 990 for the upgrade. I don't mind as it is always an opportunity to neaten things up. But if there is not much benefit for HT I will wait until I have other changes that have to make to my system before a surgical strike and down load on it.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Gonk, sorry to hear about your hip. How is the recovery coming along?

I finished the upgrade and reassembled my system. I was moving it out of my music/HT room. I had to try 2 different computers my lap top would not work for some reason. It meant I had to disassemble the 990 and take it do a desk top in another part of the house.
I would guess having access may be stopping some like my self from the upgrade.

Anyway, I finished the install and reconfiguration then started looking for a movie with some good affects. I found The Matrix and Transformers were playing at that time.
There was a clear difference immediately noticeable. Even with my SMS-1 in the chain there had always been much exaggerated bass at times or there seemed no need for a rumbling of bass during some passages. There is more punch evenly spread out in the room without being exaggerated.

I need to refresh my memory with the manual for the SMS-1 to see if the way it is calibrated will make any difference with this change in the 990.

For anyone still unsure about the upgrade I would highly recommend it.

Just read this and have still been thinking about it, now I will try to make it a point to do the upgrade in the next few weeks, or...Just might wait and get the 997. Thanks.

The feature I like best about the upgrade is the ability to rename the audio inputs. laugh
