Got my new pioneer blu ray player BDP-51FD connecting with an (hdmi to dvi cable) to my outlaw 990.

From the outlaw 990 got a (dvi to hdmi cable) connected to my Panasonic AE-2000 projector.
I got great sound coming from the 7.1 analog out from the blu ray to my 990 but no picture.

It looks like the projector is getting some sort of signal as the screen is black and not the usual no signal blue color. What gives?

The hdmi connnection is fairly long at 25ft, but my cable box is hooked up the same way and i have no problems with the picture or sound on the cable box.

Is it possible that that since i'm using 7.1 analog out on the blu-ray player it will not output the picture because i'm using an hdmi to dvi cable?

What am i doing wrong?

I've not used either that player or that projector, so I'm going to have to talk generalities for now...

No - that should not be the issue. I would start by checking to see what resolution the player is set to and if that resolution is supported by your projector. I'd also double-check the 990's settings to make sure the correct DVI connection is assigned to the 7.1 Direct input.

i'm thinking the hdmi to dvi cable is the problem, even though the same cable from my cable box works fine.

maybe the blu ray player is much more picky about dvi.

Have you tried a single cable directly from your BDP to your projector?

DVI to HDMI is not a conversion - it is transparent. There's absolutely no reason for HDMI-to-DVI to create a problem.

could it just be that the cable itself is a bad cable? a broken cable?

When I got my new 990 I had a bad BlueJeans cable DVI => HDMI. They replaced the cable and all was well. It is possible you have a bad cable but I would double check my settings and if still not working call Outlaw. They were a big help when I trouble shot mine.

Could be a HDCP problem. Turn on the player after you've switched the 990 to the appropriate input.

tried everything then chose to make a direct connection to my projector and bingo, works fine. what a pain in the ass. just happy it works now.

i take it was a hdcp handshake issue?

maybe its because its a new pioneer blu ray player with special copyright protection gizmos that mess up with the hdmi to dvi cable?

Most likely - or perhaps a bad cable somewhere in the path that you've now been able to skip past. Are you running the video output of the Pioneer at 1080p? That would increase the bandwidth required and could cause a "borderline" cable that worked with a 1080i source to fail to deliver a complete signal. Since we're in the digital domain, there's no "fuzzy" picture as signal strength drops or picture missing one color set: you either get everything, you get some "sparklies" if the signal strength is just a little lower than the display would like, or you get nothing because the signal is too weak or incomplete for the display to decode.

Nope - there's no way for it to know or care that there's a DVI connector anywhere in the signal path, because it's nothing more than a pair of adapters that match up the different pin configurations. Seriously - going from HDMI to DVI for video is a passive and transparent process. The only thing that happens inside a DVI-to-HDMI adapter or cable is that the wires go to different shaped plugs. The same number of video wires pass through as would exist with DVI-to-DVI (single link) or HDMI-to-HDMI.
