This question may seem rudimentary but I’m a newby to Surround Sound and need clarification on the 1050’s 6.1 capabilities. Can or can’t I take advantage of the 1050’s Center Surround channel on DTS soundtracks? Or do I even want to? My DVD can decode DTS. I'm a little confused with what I've read in the 1050 manual, Outlaws 1050 information sheet, and the FAQ section of their website.

Thanks in advance for your help.

From what I've read in some of the reviews, if you run the decoded DTS through the 5.1 channel inputs on the Outlaw, then activate 6.1 processing, you'll be able to get DTS matrixed 6.1. There's no real way to get the DTS discreet 6.1 with the Outlaw that I know of.

Really? I didn't realize that worked. Of course, I don't have the outs to test it on my DVD player. I didn't think there was anyway to get the 1050 to use the rear center on DTS. I'd be curious to hear if anybody has actually done thisand had it work successfully.

Yes it works.

If you have a DVD player with 5.1 analog outputs and plug them into the 1050's 5.1 analog inputs, then the 1050 can matrix the left & right surround channels to generate the cetner surround channel. It will not recognize the DTS ES (or is the 6th channel indicated by EX?) flag however.

Very good to know. Next question:
Gladiator is recorded in DTS ES. My Sony DVD player decodes DTS but makes no mention of DTS ES. I wonder if it will send the 5.1 channels of regular DTS or if I'll have to switch and get the matrixed center from Dolby Digital?

I haven't received my surround speakers yet so I haven't had a chance to play around with it yet. I appreciate the input and have found the saloon very helpful and informational.

If you use your players digital connection to the 1050 you'll get standard 5.1 DTS and no way to get the center surround. If you use your players 5.1 analog connection to the 1050, the player will decode to fit those 5.1 connections and then the 1050 will be able to generate (via amtrix)the center surround channel.

HTH,

Another question. I put in Gladiator last night and noticed that the DDigital and Prologic indicators showed up on the 1050 instead of the DTS. I had set the sound track to DTS ES and am using an optical cable with my Sony DVP-S570D although I do have pcm cables hooked up also in case I wanted to do 6.1 with the DTS ES signal which is already decoded from the Sony. In this case, I just want to do DTS. From what I understand, the 1050 should recognize the signal as regular DTS since it can't decode DTS ES. Am I doing something wrong?

Im not sure if I'm getting a DTS signal or regular DD. Any ideas out there?

The "Pro-Logic" part befuddles me -- that indicates that it's not even using the digital input, because if it were the 1050 wouldn't be trying to use Pro-Logic.

By "PCM" do you mean the two-channel analog output from the DVD player, or the 5.1 analog? And have you double-checked to make sure the 1050 is using the optical digital input for the DVD input?

And have you double checked that the DVD Player is configured to allow DTS? It's a setting you usually have to manually activate in the Setup Menu on many DVD Players.
