I am considering purchasing a Sony or Panasonic Blu Ray player. The Panasonic BD 50 or a Sony player that is coming out June or July but it is suppose to be second generation blu ray player.
I have the 990 and a Infocus7205 and I was wondering how to hook up any blu ray with the DVI input on the 990. Or should I connect the blu ray directly to the projector for best picture and sound?
With the DVI input on the projector I need a M1 to DVI cable.
With HDMI I need a M1 to HDMI adapter.

Anyone...Thanks confused

Unless you need video switching for 2 sources, I would just use direct connections to your display device. As far as the audio, your best connection would be to use the 7.1 analogs between your player and the 990. Using the digital optical/coaxial connections for audio, you will get normal DTS and DD fine, though any of the higher resolution audio formats will have to be in PCM.

If you want to view the 990 screen menus, you will need a component, composite, or s-video connection to your display device.

Having used a Panasonic BD30, I think the BD50 should be a very good Blu-ray player. As for video hook-up, you can do it either way. If you will be using any other DVI or HDMI sources, you can use the 990's DVI switching to connect both of them to the InFocus. If the Blu-ray player is the only one in the system with an HDMI or DVI output, then you can just connect directly to the projector.

Thanks Gonk and Lee.
I have not pull the trigger yet as I want to wait and see want Sony is going to put on the table in the next couple of months.
My friend just bought the Panasonic BD50 and is very happy.
If I buy the Sony from the dealer that I recently purchased my B&W's from they will program my MX 3000 at no charge.

I've got a PS3, which will decode everything now, but am SOL until I get something with HDMI in.

Rubbersoul -- I'd be interested to know where your friend got the BD50, as I can't seem to find it for sale yet in the US.

Using a PS3 with the 990 does not allow access to TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, or multichannel PCM. The BD50 will be a better choice, with disc access that is comparable (based on the BD30) and Profile 2.0 support as well as multichannel analog output for only a little more money.

Acutally Gonk, TrueHD and DTS-MA are now enabled on the PS3, it became a profile 2.0 player with the recent firmware updates. Unfortunately, it cannot bitstream the lossless formats, only PCM over HDMI. This is due to a hardware limitation.

The BD50 sounds like it will be in high demand, since it is about the only profile 2.0 standalone player coming out this summer.(I'm sure this information will probably be outdated as I type!)

Yes, the PS3 does now support DTS-HD MA and will support Profile 2.0, but the new audio formats (DD+, TrueHD, and DTS-HD) only work when connected to an HDMI v1.1 receiver or processor. The original poster was asking about what to use with the Model 990, which is why I would recommend the BD50 over the PS3.
