Help, I have had my 990/7125 running Paradigm CC-470, Studio 20s L/F and in wall and ceiling referance rears. My sub is a SVS PB10 in a Salamander cabinet. My ears are always sore ( thought I had tennitus). I have constintly made calibration adjustments manualy and auto to no success. also on the sub. recently swiched the CC-470 and installed my Paradigm CC-370 from the bedroom. Saw a softer sound and was better on the ears, my wife also noticed a better sound. Why does the CC-370 sound better than the more expensive CC-470? Would a Velodyne SMS-1 make the CC-470 sound right? If so, why would I have to spend $500.00 to make a more expensive speaker sound better? What is going on?

The SMS-1 does not do anything for full-range speakers - it is a subwoofer equalizer.

As for why you are hearing a difference between the CC-470 and CC-370, I can't say. I don't have either speaker, although my Studio/CCv2 is probably similar to the 470. There are several possibilities, certainly. The 470 may have a different tweeter, different crossover network, or both. The results could be an accentuated high end, which some people don't find to their liking - especially if the room is a bit live (hard surfaces and the like). I recall that my Paradigms clearly benefited from the addition of an area rug after we removed the wall-to-wall carpet and refinished the hard wood floor of our old living room.

I would have to agree with Gonk. You mention what equipment you have but nothing about placement or how the room is set up. Don't be so quick to judge the equipment.

First, is the CC370 in the same exact place as the CC470 was?

Second, what is your room like? Do you have lots of windows or hard surfaces? Do you have any kind of curtains or carpeting? Is your room box shaped?

If you provide more details, maybe even some pictures, you will probably get more suggestions and tips than questions. You got the equipment, now it's time to work on the other part of your system: your room.

Don't know how to attach a picture, the room is setup like this: Salamander cabinet is in an alcove 1 foot from wall. 9' 4" wide, then 1 foot forward, the room expands to the right with a doorway to 13' 7.5" width. 8' ceiling. room depth is 19'. Theater chairs (four) 1 foot from rear wall. One big window on left wall with curtains. Room is carpeted. All xovers set at 100. Calibrations set at:

Channels Delay
FL 0 15
C 2 14
FR 0 15
SR -1 9
SBR-2 8
SBL-3 7
SL -2 6
Sub 3 15

With the Paradigm cc370, I still only have a comfortable volume level at -37 which seems very low.

the tweeters on some speakers cause ear fatigue... and that is a tired-ness or slight discomfort in your ear drums from the tweeters...

if you have different speakers you can swap out with those.. try it for a few days with your set up... and see if you still get the same results.

my guess is that those tweeters are the cause of it.

good luck. it can really be a problem, that ear fatigue.

Skyblazer,
I have been talking w/ ksam. He has a nice setup in a cool room. I think it might be more of a setup issue than anything else.

But i hear you - there are some speaker systems i can not listen to for more than 20 minutes due to the sound......
