Problem with OSD

Hi:
How is the OSD supposed to work?
I have a 990 connected to a Sony VPW projector via HDMI, and because the 990 is located out of sight, I have a small 8" LCD display connected to the 990 composite video output. When I press the menu button on the 990 remote, the LCD displays the 990 setup menu, however, when watching DVDs on the Sony, the LCD does not show any of the pop-up displays - volume etc. If I press video 3 or 4 on the remote, the pop-up displays do show up on the LCD, but the Sony no longer shows the DVD.
Any suggestions?

Thanks Gonk,
I checked, the DVD input setting for the OSD MSG feature is set to "ON". It is set to ON for all of the video inputs. Still no OSD when running a DVD.
Should I try resetting the 990?

You’ll get the OSD on the analog inputs only: S-Video, Composite, and Component. The DVI/HDMI is strict past trough only. I’ve same setup here. For display the menu while DVI/HDMI input is selected I’m using the 17” monitor connected to S-Video.

I have my cable box running through Component Video 1. My OSD is set to on, and I do not see any OSD Messages either. Hasn't worked like that since I got it. I understand it won't work over the DVI interface, and don't use DVI switch anyways. Yes, I am on the latest code.
I see on page 10 in the manual that you must be using either Composite or S-Video. If it does work over component, it may switch out your video like it does when entering the setup menu.

As a video professional who's been finding workable alternatives for years, here's one:
If you're not using the composite video ins and outs for anything else, try running the luminance (Y) portion of your component signal (three signals: Y, U, V or Y, R-Y, B-Y) through the composite ins and outs instead of the first of the three component inputs. The second and third component ins and outs are run normally. If the composite and component ins and outs are switched together, despite your input type selection, the triad signal will get where it belongs - plus, when the OSD signal is inserted into the luminance signal, you'll get a B&W menu on your component display.

All:
Thanks for the suggestions, it seems that the OSD pop ups will not function if the video input is set to DVI. Therefore, I decided to connect the DVD HDMI output directly to the projector, basically, bypassing the 990. I changed the set up in the 990 to composite for the DVD, this now gives me the OSD pop-ups on my 8" LCD.
