I have been reading everyones questions and answers on this subject and I am confused as ever.If my cd palyer is hooked up to the 7.1 direct input for reg cd or sacd and my speakers are set to small and sub yes are these settings still applied? or are my speakers running full range? bypassing the speaker settings or do I have to turn my fronts to large for the full range 2 channel sound. And what would happen if I leave my front speakers large and sub lfe only. then the sub would kick in mainly during dolby digital movies which I can live with, because I really do not need my sub for music.I have tried these configs and I just want to set it for the best 2 channel config.without changing sizes when I switch from music to movies. My dvd player is hooked up through the digital input and does all this matter if I am using the 7.1 direct input for music.

7.1 input
front small
center small
rears small
sub yes

front large
center small
rear small
sub l&r and sub

front large
center small
rears small
sub lfe or none

The 990 applies bass management to the 7.1 input, so if you have speakers set to small then they will get bass management. This is the same bass management that will take place with a digital input.

When fronts are large and sub is LFE only, then you are correct that you would have no sub with two-channel music.

What is the -3dB point of your front speakers? Leaving them large is certainly a reasonable option, but I've also had good luck with some careful selection of crossover point for the fronts.

That's close to the -3dB point on my Studio/60's. Before I got the SMS-1, I used both a 40Hz crossover (when paired with an SVS 25-31PCi) and a 60Hz crosssover (when paired with the LFM-1) and achieved good two-channel music performance. That being said, if "large" sounds best, go with it.

thanks
right now I have been switching back and forth between the 40 and 60 hz without the sub. I will have to keep listening and see which I like better. I just wanted to make sure I was not missing out on anything the 990 would provide sound wise in 2 channel mode
