Hello everyone!

Today I got to wondering, once again, about the universal remote issue. Here's my question:

Is it possible to program a newfangled laptop so that it can also be used as a universal remote? Or, is it too impractical, or not at all possible?

On the one hand, yes, I would say that it's possible to set up software on a laptop or tablet PC that would mimic a fancy universal remote. Connectivity to the system would be necessary, but that coule be accomplished somehow I'm sure. In a way, custom integration systems like Crestron are at least similar to PC's.

On the other hand, no, I would say that it is not practical. The hardware cost (both the laptop and the hardware required to interface with the system somehow) would rival the most expensive remotes from Universal and Pronto, and the labor required to achieve a user friendly interface would likely be significantly more than setting up either of those would take.

I agree with gonk. Can be done but much more practical to get say an MX-850. Easy to program and update, ergonomic and easy to use in the dark.

I was hoping to justify/rationalize the purchase of a new laptop ... bummer! lol

I really like the Crestons, but have access only to their web site, which doesn't seem to list prices. I assume these are exceptionally pricey?

"Exceptionally pricey" is a good way to put it - it might even be putting things a bit mildly. The programming and installation required to do a system like that is particularly pricey, and not really something that they expect consumers to do themselves. You typically see those systems put in and programmed by custom installers.

I'm not surprised. They are certainly impressive looking units. I'm a sucker for these things. Thankfully I'm also thrifty enough to keep myself in check! lol

How is the Harmony 1000, as a universal remote and would it also resolve the lack of "line of sight" problem?

If the goal is to avoid the line of sight limitation of IR, there are a number of good choices - which is best will depend on your needs and preferences. Universal makes a bunch of RF-capable remotes that are very customizable (including a PC interface, which is definitely helpful). The MX-810, 850, 900, 950, and 980 are all hard-button remotes with RF support and LCD screens for some extra flexibility, and the TX-1000 and MX-3000 even offer touch screens if you like that approach. Harmony's 890 and 1000 both offer RF support as well. Pronto also offers some RF remotes.

If you need lighting controls, Monster Cable also makes the AVL-300 RF remote, which is based on the Harmony 890 hardware.

I like the remote, but the Harmony software is a pain in the ass sometimes to use.

If you think the Universal remotes look promising, you might want to check out Surf Remote Controls online - their site shows the list prices, but you can talk to them and on most things get a good discount. They have a good reputation online.
