Hello everyone!
Today I got to wondering, once again, about the universal remote issue. Here's my question:
Is it possible to program a newfangled laptop so that it can also be used as a universal remote? Or, is it too impractical, or not at all possible?
thanks,
John

I agree with gonk. Can be done but much more practical to get say an MX-850. Easy to program and update, ergonomic and easy to use in the dark.

Thank you both!
I was hoping to justify/rationalize the purchase of a new laptop ... bummer! lol
I really like the Crestons, but have access only to their web site, which doesn't seem to list prices. I assume these are exceptionally pricey?
Again, thanks for guidance.

I'm not surprised. They are certainly impressive looking units. I'm a sucker for these things. Thankfully I'm also thrifty enough to keep myself in check! lol
How is the Harmony 1000, as a universal remote and would it also resolve the lack of "line of sight" problem?
thanks, Gonk!

If you need lighting controls, Monster Cable also makes the AVL-300 RF remote, which is based on the Harmony 890 hardware.
I like the remote, but the Harmony software is a pain in the ass sometimes to use.

Thank you both.
I asked about the Harmony 1000 because it's on sale, locally. Will have to decide on my needs and do some research.
Again, thanks!

You can get the MX-850 from HiDef Lifestyles for $180 that includes shipping and the base to use RF is another $130. Even if you wouldn't prefer the MX-850 they have alot of good deals on remotes and customer service is excellent.

I just got an MX-850 on Monday of this week and all I can say is WOW!! After stumbling a little bit with the software initally, I have discoverd that it is very easy to program especially when you are doing macros. Also the learning step is very easy. You can't go wrong.

Thank you all for the information.
I like the palette style of the Harmony 1000. The Logitech web site claims one-touch accessibility. However, whenever I need to access the 990's menu, I have to switch between the HDMI and Video1 input of my display and then back again, when I want to watch a program or DVD. Can the Harmony 1000 accommodate this need, does anyone know?
thanks,
John

I have the 890. The programing is pretty straight foward and the 1000 should be able to do what you want.
I don't use the video switching of the 990 and have my Harmony set up to change the TV's video inputs as to what I'm using as a source. jim

I use the 880 & programmed a button to do just that. Push that button & my panny switches to svid & automatically brings up the 990 menu. Press HDMI1 & i'm back to that source. Can't imagine the 1000 being any harder. Heck, there may even be a better method than mine, i'm no expert.
