Just got my 990 & having a hard time with the lip synch. Connected audio via optical. Connected video via HDMI. Both the HD-DVD & the Satellite the lips are moving ahead of the sound, raising the lip synch makes it worse. Any ideas. Is it because of the HDMI.

Check your speaker distance settings. Lip sync adjustment is provided because video processing can often create delays in the video signal, and the lip sync adjustment allows you to essentially "pause" the audio just enough to get back in line with the video. The only way I can think of for the video to be ahead of the audio is for the speaker distance settings (which create audio delays to compensate for the speed of sound and different distances from speakers to the listening position) to be set too high (creating too much audio delay). This also fits with the problem occuring on both video sources, since it is a global system setting.

Have you checked both the HD-DVD and Sat box for any lip sync adjustments?
To eliminate the HDMI, you'll have to use component cable connections instead.

It doesn't sound like the sources are applying some lip sync adjustment. This one has me a bit stumped at the moment. How much lip sync adjustment were you applying when experimenting with the HDMI connections?

The adjustments only slow down the audio not speed it up. Am using a Sony XBR900 1080i.

The adjustments can't speed up the audio beyond the 0ms setting - doing so would require delaying the video. I was curious about how much adjustment you used just to try to gauge how much delay might already exist.

I thought it was just me......but, I'm having the same problem....the audio is lagging BEHIND the video......and, as far as I can tell, distance settings done with the automatic set up are spot on. And, even if they were a little off, I can't imagine them making that much of a difference. Plus, I am unable to use the front panel display.....it just doesn't respond to the remote command. So, I have to toggle to the OSD and back.....making it much more difficult....and just like Steve said...all it does is make it worse anyway. I kind of gave up on it.....other than this issue, the 990 is super.

Here's the oddest thing, at least from my perspective - it should not be possible for the video to be ahead of the audio under normal circumstances. I'd suggest setting speaker distances and AV Sync settings to 0 to start with and work backward from there.

John - to use the front panel display to adjust an input's AV sync control, you need to have the updated firmware installed on the 990 (v3.11). The original firmware (v3.07) didn't support this capability. At that point, you can press "TNR" on the 990's remote, press "SYNC," use the navigation keypad to adjust the sync setting for the active input, and then "ENTER" to accept a setting.
