I have a 950 which I really like. Is there that much difference in sound between the 950 & 990 to move up to the 990. Looking for improvements in sound not features. The 950 does sound great just looking to see if the 990 is that much better.

The 950 is a nice piece of gear, but I did hear a difference when upgrading to the 990. We're talking about two good products here, so there is a certain degree of "diminishing returns" involved, but there was definitely an improvement. Here's a piece of my review from a couple years ago, written when the differences were fresh in my memory:

Quote:
Once I did so, I was able to confirm the impression that had been forming during the setup period. The sonic performance is perhaps best described as "transparent." Three years ago, I remarked on how good the 950 was with CD's, but the 990 is a somewhat different case – more refined, perhaps, and even clearer. The soundstage is better, as is the imaging, most noticeably with CD playback in stereo. The noise floor on the 990 is lower than any other piece of gear I've worked with. Several times I found myself standing in front of the entertainment center while running a wire or swapping between the stock remote and my MX-500, almost directly up against the center channel or one of the main speakers, and with the 990 on an inactive input (not muted, but with everything on and no signal for the unit to reproduce) the speakers were dead quiet. There was no noise, no hiss or hum or buzz, nothing to call attention to the 990 at all. You could put your ear to the grille cloth and hear nothing. It was almost eerie at times.

About 2.5 year ago I bought a used 950 off eBay and used it for about a year.
Then last year I replaced it with the 990 (as well as my Adcom Amp with the 7125).
I would say that the 2-ch CD sound is MUCH better than it was before.
I am using the Upsample mode, which really makes a difference.
For movies, the sound is also better than with the 950, and there are more options in the menus.

I would suggest geting the 990.
You can use it with your current amp, but the 7125 works quite nice with it.
