I've got a Sharp XR10X projector as my primary video display device. It is an analog only projector, I feed it from the 990 with a long (30') component-to-VGA conversion cable, which for the most part, works fine; including hi-def signals, like my up-converting DVD player.

One thing I've not been able to do is use the 990 to pass a computer video signal to the projector. What I've tried is to use another VGA->component cable, running the video card output into one of the component inputs on the Outlaw.

I've tried this with multiple computers, without success. For some reason, the projector just won't recognize whatever the 990 is passing to it. If I unplug the long cable from the outlaw, and connect it directly to the computer, it seems to work fine.

Is this a known limitation? Any ideas for other ways I might be able to make this work?

Doh! re-reading my post, I realize that there's no way I could have connected my long cable direclty to the computer (it has a component, not vga end on it). So, for that test, I must have used a different vga/vga cable. Anyways, my question still is: can I use the 990 to pass a VGA signal throught he component jacks?

The 990 doesn't do any video processing to the component inputs. On the other hand, VGA and component are not interchangeable signal formats, so using component switching to switch a VGA source is not likely to work - whether that component switch is the 990's, some other receiver or processor's, or a standalone component switch.

I believe the reason that the component to VGA cable works is that your projector's VGA input is doing double duty as both a VGA and a component input.

A crazy thought...if redrob is really just using the analog component video pins of his VGA connections, it might be possible to use VGA to component video adapters at both ends, and use the 990 to switch component video inputs and output, similar to using the HDMI/DVI adapters with the 990 DVI switching for HDMI.

If his video card was configured to use the VGA output as a component output, that could work. Unfortunately, I haven't done enough HTPC stuff to know how feasible that is. I have not ever seen a way to do, so I'm not optimistic of it.

My HTPC is connected to my 990 via DVI. The computer is up 24/7. However, I occasionally (though rarely, thanks to Linux) need to reboot. When I reboot while the 990 is turned off, my display does not pass through the 990 once I turn it on (similar to what you are experiencing) until I reset the video mode which allows my video card to detect the display.

In your case, and if I understand your post correctly, going VGA to component and back to VGA, that may make it impossible for your video card to recognize the display unless you manually force it to a specific mode and frequency, which may be dangerous to your projector.

Have you experimented with the video mode switching on your PC? Some computers use a hot-key like Alt-F8, Alt-F5 or Ctl-Backspace to reset the video mode or cycle through modes. This will use the detected display's frequencies and should not be dangerous. The risk to your display comes if you want to manually set monitor type and frequencies using trial and error, which I don't recommend and should only be done if you know exactly what settings to use.
