Hello everyone!

I'm just in the process of configuring my 990 as a video switcher, between a high def sat signal and my Oppo 981. My question is: does the 990 have to be turned on, in order to view either the sat box or the Oppo signal? I assume the answer is yes, but was hoping I could get away with leaving it off.

All this modern technology is wonderful/powerful, but sure makes for complexity where setup is concerned.

Thanks in advance,

John

Yes, the 990 does need to be on for the video switching to operate.

I'll stand by my normal advise for home theater setup: if you have a surround receiver or processor, plan to use it all the time (not just when watching a movie and looking for the full "theater" experience), because it will make using the system quite a bit easier to operate. It's very common for folks to set out to arrange things so you can just watch TV through the television's speakers (the long-standing and familiar method) even when setting up a surround system, but when you start to try to make it all work that way, it ends up being more complicated every time.

Thanks, Gonk,

that's exactly what I intended to do. I will heed your advice and hope that the 990 doesn't mind being on all the time! lol

Again, thank you.

I'm one that does not do video switching thru my 990, mainly because I like to have my video display on while listening to music thru the 990. I do have a digital connection bewteen my Sat. receiver and 990 but also have an analog connection to the TV.

I also just use my TV speakers when watching news and other material that doesn't benefit from surround sound. I have my MX-700 setup so it is not really a hassle to do it that way. Even so I do have my 990 on most of the time.

When all the HDMI stuff settles down and a good pre/pro with full HDMI comes out I will then probably go to video switching thru the pre/pro.

The 990 won't object to being on - mine routinely spends most of the weekends turned on and at least a few hours each evening.

Well, I'm definitely giving the video switching a try and only hope that it won't degrade the image quality, in any way.

I still may also add an analogue out from my sat box to my tv.

Again, thank you all.

Good luck, John! My experience with the 990's video switching has not shown any video degradation.

Thanks, Gonk!

Soon, I'll find out for myself.

I meant to say I still may also add an analogue out from my 990 to my TV, rather than from my sat box (which would be of no benefit, if I have to keep the 990 on).

Again, thanks.
