I bought a 990 processor B Stock. It arrived the 30th of August. I matched it up to my 770 amp that I've had for a couple of years. In short, I can't believe how fantastic the 990 sounds with my Outlaw 770 amp.

I have a question on the upsample for cd and dvd.
When I change from upsample to say 5 channel stereo using the remote while playing a cd, I can't put it back into upsample without going into audio input setup in the menu. Also, I must change source from cd to FM etc. before the unit will let me change a surround mode on the cd in the menu. Is this normal?

Just tried scrolling through the various modes you mentioned and didn't see the results you mentioned. I am able to scroll through 5-Channel, Stereo, Bypass and Upsample using the remote. I see the changes on the 990 display. Same with the Dolby and DTS modes. I can scroll through them while having the 990 in CD mode. Same with DVD mode.

I'm going to try a reset on the 990 to see if that will remedy my problem. I'll list my findings.

It appears to be functioning correctly now.
I had the SYSTEM LOCK set to ON.

When trying to change modes, is the CD player playing at the time? If it is stopped, there would be no bitstream coming to the 990 and it wouldn't be able to determine what modes might be available.
