I recently got a new Samsung DLP and a Denon DVD player that is hooked up via the DVI (with an HDMI cable)and audio is optical right into the 1050. Now when I watch DVD's the audio does not perfectly match the video. I have a 1050 that only goes up to 5ms delay on the center. Some newer, and more expensive, receivers have a higher delay such as Marantz's "lip sync" feature. Do I need to buy a new receiver for this to work or is there another solutiion?

The problem here is that either the DVD player or the DLP set is applying video processing that creates a delay in the video signal. If the delay only appears on DVD's, then it's the DVD player's processing that's creating the sync problem. The 1050 does not have a lip sync adjustment - the center channel delay is to compensate for different distances from speakers to the listening position, so that sound from each speaker reaches the listening position at the same time. A visible sync error is going to involve anywhere from 15 to 50ms, and receivers that offer a proper audio sync delay typically offer 100ms to 200ms of delay in increments of 1ms, 5ms, or 10ms.

Unless your DVD player has an audio delay control, the only way to adjust would be to either get a new receiver or invest in an external device. There are a couple audio delay devices, but they're pricey.

thanks. If I use the component video cables instead of the HDMI (and the video processing of the DVD player) will this fix the problem?

It may very well fix the problem, as the deinterlacing done for the component output is not likely to be the culprit - the scaling being done for the HDMI output is where the video processing really gets intensive.

I'll try that and see if the video quality really suffers.
