When I had Cable, and listend to Music Choice channels (via toslink), I would only be able to listen with the 990 set to "Upsample".

If I put it on Stereo, Bass is the only sounds that would be produced and booming. If I went through the dolby settings, I would get normal sound, though through channels that I did not want sound from (center).

I switched to DirecTV, and with the XM channels, I have the same problem via the same toslink cable and into the same 990 input. Quite loud and alarming when you try to cycle through the stereo settings.

Let me add, 7ch and 5ch stereo work fine, but anything two channel just pumps out bass to you.

I changed the cable used, and toslink input to the 990 used, with the same result.

Anyone know what setting might be messed up?

More testing...

It's any attempt to play 2 channel music through Toslink pumps out Bass, nothing else.

Thoughts?

That's odd. It only happens with music channels from cable or satelite? I've never encountered that, but my cable input is generally set up for PLIIx-Movie mode (which worked for you as well).

Yes, very weird. Some questions:

With a name like jester7677, I should ask if you're kidding! :-)

Did you try any/all of the other optical inputs on the 990?

Did you try connecting it with coax? Any old RCA cable will do for testing purposes.

Do DD5.1 programs come through and does the 990 automatically switch as it should?

I connect my cable box with toslink and like Gonk default to PLIIx, but I sometimes do switch to stereo and upsample for their digital music channels and it all works fine.

Did some more testing.

When using Toslink cable if I send the 990 Music:
Cable - MusicChoice
SAT - XM
DVD player - Pink Floyd the Wall or any other album

The sub goes nuts when set on:
Stereo
Upsample
Bypass

Front display has "PCM" and also "Digital" lit.

The bass far, far more nuts than with DD. At -75 one dB from off, it's shaking everything in the room.

Currently my only solution is to turn off the sub trigger for an input specifically to then be used for Music. Normally I listen to CD's from the DVD player using 7.1 direct (and no issue then), but I'd like to listen to XM, but it's a bit tough needing the TV to tune the channels.

What has not worked:
- I tried the other toslink inputs into the 990 with the same effect.
- I tried different sources with the same effect.
- I pulled the cord on the 990 for 5 mins with no effect to the problem.
- I have tried a balanced cable from 990 to Sub with no effect.
- I have tried setting L/R Speaker Size to LARGE and Sub to L/R+Sub with no effect.
- Changed the output of the source from DD if possible, to PCM only, and no effect on the problem.
- I tried connecting the L/R from the SAT box, to the "AUX" input in the back of the 990, and SAME damn booming bass.

What has worked:
- Changed Front L/R speaker size to "Large", and Subwoffer to "None". This is not an option.
- Sub is fine on Stereo setting "7" or "5" channel.
*** Changed Front L/R speaker size to "Large", and Subwoffer to "LFE Only". This solved the hammering bass, but introduced a thump on channel change. Keep in mind, that the thump only occurs on Stereo/Upsample (Not Bypass, why I don't know) ****

Normal HT Setup:
- Speaker size are all small with Sub set to YES.
- Front X'ed at 40HZ (which they can handle)
- Surround: 2ch sub offset is -8dB.
- Channel Cal: Sub is -15dB
- Connection to Sub: Balanced line going to the sub. (Axiom EP-600)

Reset seems to have solved the issue. I should have just reset it from the beginning. Writing down the settings is my tip of the day.

If you have not, shame on you.

At least I know when my 990 is feeling sick, the room will shake...

I am glad reset worked. There is one potential issue if you have the first version of the 990 firmware update and not the second. There was a bug in the first version of the 990 firmware update, so if you set the sub trim to -15 dB and the 2 channel offset to -8 dB, it incorrectly goes to maximum sub output. This was explained by Scott at Model 990 Sub Trim Update . There is no problem at setting away from the extremes.

After installing the first version of the software update successfully, I never bothered with the fix because my sub level is not set that low and I can compensate with the sub gain/volume. Anyway, I'm a Mac guy and have to borrow a PC to do the updates, which is a pain.
