I have just bought a lightly used 990, that I should be getting next week. The 990 will be replacing a Sherbourn PT-7010A. It was a nice pre/pro but lacked bass management on the 7.1 inputs.

I will be feeding the 990 from a HTPC with HDDVD and Blu-Ray, with a X-Meridian Sound Card. I have a ATI 3003 Amp feeding 3x Ascend 340SE for the fronts, and 2 Crown XLS402 feeding the 4x Ascend HTM-200 surrounds.

The only question I have on the 990, is if there is a discrete IR code, for direct volume control. Say if I wanted to program a macro that the outlaw would go to -10db or -5db?

fireanimal,

Welcome to the Saloon and Outlaw ownership. You have a very nice setup of amps and speakers and the 990 will be a nice addition.

I don't think there is a direct way to choose a specific volume except upon startup. There is a feature to set the volume every time the 990 is turned on. I have mine set at -40 to account for certain TV stations that run much higher volumes than most. I suppose you could program a universal remote with a specific number of volume + key strokes to get to the desired volume from the startup volume. However, there might be a pretty long delay as each key stroke was executed.
Just an idea...

The default volume would have to be left low for that same reason, I will be using it with TV, and channels are all over the place.

The sherbourn had an option through the RS232, that this could be done, but not with the remote.

The reason that I would like this, is that my equipment will be in a different room than I am sitting, and if I am watching a movie with the HTPC, I would like it to default to a volume level that is close to reference without having to watch the display for the level. The OSD is not displayed over the DVI port and that is what will be doing my switching.

Thanks

As AvFan has indicated, there are not discrete codes for specific volume positions. There is the start-up volume default (mine is set to -35). There is also the 990's RS232 protocol , but I don't recall if the protocol includes direct volume values or not. I think it just has up, down, and a few direct values.

I figured that there wouldn't be any, but I was looking for some easy automation, so I didn't have to walk to the other room.

I should get this on Friday, and I am very excited to see how it sounds!
