Wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem: I have a standard VHS player with composite out and it is connected to video 4 on the 990. I have a single component output to my tv so am relying on the 990 for the switching. For some reason while watching VHS, the image flickers on and off at a semi regular interval. Just to make sure it wasn't a source problem, I connected the vhs directly to the tv and video 5 on the 990 with no issues. It would seem I just have a faulty 990 but was wondering if anyone else had input on this.

I have had a similar problem with my 970 when using it for video switching on a composite source. For example, I simply cannot run the SMS-1 video out through the 970 without the screen scrolling. Like you, I hooked it up directly to a spare TV input and I had no problems -- thus ruling out the the SMS-1 as the culprit.

Similarly, when I hit stop on my VHS, the blue screen goes into a scrolling pattern.
