I am in the process of looking for and SDI moddified DVD player to send the digiatal video signal in original Mpeg2 to to an external processor (DVDO HD+). Bottom line is the video performance between units will be some what irrelevant as the external processor will handle the work and the signal sent will be digital 480i.
I have narrowed the serach to the two units above and am more concerned with the build quality of the units. From the images, the Oppo looks to have a very flimsy transport mech. If I am going to spend $400 to moddify one of these units, I want it to obviously last.

The 1930 is near the bottom of Denon's line, so the build quality won't match their higher-end units. For what it's worth, I've been using an OPPO player (971H or 981HD) for the better part of two years now and the super-thin tray has never been a problem.

I'm afraid not. The digital video input can't be converted to analog. The 981HD isn't intended to be used with displays that lack a DVI or HDMI input, and copy protection for HDMI makes this conversion difficult. The 970HD from OPPO may be a better choice in that case. There's even a firmware hack on AVS that will allow upconversion from the component output.
