I am a new owner of the 990. I have owned several receivers over the years. This is my first venture into separates.

Anyways, I have an ATI 5ch amp connected to my 990. Unfortunately it doesn't have a 12v trigger.
I have purchased a smartstrip http://www.bitsltd.net/SmartStrip/buy.htm
but that did not work. Anyone have any other suggestions?

thanks

With no trigger on your amp, there are still a few options. The Craftsman 24031 Auto Switch will create a switched outlet that is triggered by the current draw on another outlet (such as the one powering the 990). For a bit more investment, you can look at power conditioners and surge protectors that will provide some protection as well as some trigger-controlled switching. One example is the Belkin PureAV line - the PF31 and PF40 offer switching the high current outlets as well as some other outlets from a trigger like the 990's, and the PF60 allows you to specify which outlets are switched (on my PF60, only the high current outlets are switched by my 990). You can do similar things with Panamax power conditioners, but eCost often has some really good deals on Belkin PureAV that includes Belkin's warranty (eCost is an authorized dealer). Some examples: PF40 , PF40L , PF31L , and PF60 .

Thanks for the info Gonk. I will attempt to go one of those routes you mentioned.

I didn't have any luck with the craftsman switch and the 990. I don't think the 990 draws enough current. I ended up buying a panamax 4400.

I tried the craftsman switch as well over the weekend. Couldn't get it to work. I am frustrated. I did not think it would be such a big deal but it has become an annoyance.I may end up selling my ATI and purchasing an amp with a 12v trigger.

Just a thought based on Bri270's comment... If you use a TV any time the 990 is on, you might try plugging the TV into the craftsman switch - that ought to draw enough current to trip it and bring the amp on.

I tried that with my Panasonic 42PWD8UK to no avail. I don't think that was drawing enough either. It would click on for a second, and then shut down after initial start up. Other sets may work more effectively though, so it's at least worth a shot.
