I can't remember if the 990 or the 7700 shipped with a trigger cable. If not, what type of cable am I buying?

The 990 I got yesterday did not, not a mono 3.5 cable should do it.

The 7700 shipped with the trigger cable. If you can't find it, you need a cable with 1/8" mono mini-plugs on each end - kinda like this one .

Can you control when a trigger goes on via the remote easily, or do you have to select a source, and then switch back to the source you were on? I was thinking about using it for a home automation DIY project.

This the excerpt from the manual:
"Trigger 2 On/Off
DC TRIGGER OUT 2 is an assignable trigger, activated only when you select certain inputs. This is used to activate devices that you want to use only at particular times. For example, you can activate DC TRIGGER 2 for all of your video inputs, and use it to lower a projection screen and turn on a video projector. This way, your video system turns on automatically when you select a video input on the Model 990. You can also use DC TRIGGER 2 to close motorized drapes or shades, or dim automated lighting"

Are there details available on how it actually works - is it a 12V pulse? Constant 12V? Does it flip flop from NO to NC? I would want to use the trigger to control a relay to either open or close. Is this easily done? Does anyone have a wiring diagram drawn up? Thanks!

The main trigger is on any time the main or second zone is turned on, and it is on continuously. The second zone is different. Any source that has trigger 2 enabled will cause the trigger to come on when that source is selected, and it will stay on as long as that source in active.

By "on" what do you mean, does it go from NO to NC or does it provide a 12V signal?

The triggers provide a 12v signal continuously when on.
