Before I make a purchase, I had a question about bass management on the 990. I will be using this system for about half music, half theater. I use an HTPC for all of that, using an S/PDIF out from my motherboard for sound, DVI for video. If I have the powered subwoofer connected via a single cable to the 990's pre-out, what happens when listening to stereo music? As I understand it, the audio from DVD's/HDTV will be 5.1 and all bass material below XX Hz goes to the sub. When I play music from the hard drive, what will happen? Will I need to change something or will the 990 do it automatically? Thanks for the help!

If the left and right speakers are set to "small," the 990 will apply bass management and steer data below the specified crossover point to the subwoofer - this will be true whether you are listening to music or watching a movie. Since I'm off to dinner, I'll quickly offer a couple bass management summaries (one here in my 990 review and another here - complete with signal diagram - in my 990 firmware notes) that may help with some of the details. The bass management is pretty powerful, so if you have questions just toss them out and somebody around here will help sort it out.

Wow, that seems like a great deal to comprehend.

What a powerful and beauty machine, this 990 is! I'm very pleased with my choice.

Gonk, thanks for supporting us all.

P.s. ... just why do we call it bass? I'm certain that bass is a type of fish and base is the correct spelling of the pronunciation of the word we apply to describe low frequency sound.

Does anyone have any idea why this is so?

We'll have to ask the music historians in the audience for the distant origin of "bass" and "treble" - but "bass" is the correct spelling. "Base" would be a stand, foundation, or support of some sort.

Gonk,

you're right; bass is the correct spelling, but we pronounce the word: base, not bass. It's no big deal; I just wondered why the fluke. With our language, though, you just never know.
