We got the problem solved with the OS menu. There was a problem and they fixed it. Got my 990 back and everyhing works fine. However...
watching tv tonight and suddenly noticed a "hummmmmmm" coming from my subwoofer. I have the Orb speakers and Super 8 sub from Orb Audio. Can someone help me with this? The "hummmmmm" is continuous and is not affected by t volume.
Thanks

Hums like this are most often either ground loops or some other sibling of EM or RF interference. The things that I'd check would be:

  • Loose interconnect at either end.
  • Power cord in close proximity to interconnect (such as running parallel right alongside the interconnect), which can induce a hum in the audio signal.
  • Dimmers, compressors (refrigerator), motors (washer or vacuum), or other devices that could be generating the hum. Dimmer switches, for example, are notorious for dumping "noise" onto the house electrical service (particularly when dimmed at all).
  • Is your sub is on a separate circuit from the rest of the home theater equipment? Ground differences between circuits can produce this sort of problem.
  • Cable or satellite TV service with a grounding issue. To test this, just disconnect the coax cable from your cable/satellite receiver and see if the hum disappears. Cable services in particular are infamous for this sort of problem. On the bright side, if it is a cable TV grounding problem, you can simply add a good isolator (the best is probably Jensen's) and the problem should disappear.

When I've had problems like this, it has most often traced back to a problem with cable management (power cords getting too friendly with interconnects or speaker cables). If you were recently behind the rack to re-connect the 990, it's possible that something got shifted into a new position and began creating this problem. That's certainly the best (and generally easiest, conveniently enough) place to start.

The weird thing is that it did not start until I got my 990 back from repair. I did unplug the sub and carried it to a different room and plugged it in and the hum is still there. It must be an issue with the sub itsself.
