I just got lucky and bought a PS3. So I spent ~1 hour last night to run the wires: PS3 to TV (Sony 60'' XBR2) using HDMI cable and PS3 to 990 using fiber optic cable (into OPT4 IN).

After the initial set-up with PS3 on-screen menu (beautiful picture btw, 1080P rocks! laugh ) I pulled up the 990 OSD. As I only needed audio handling I renamed the TAPE input and tried to switch the input to OPT4.

However, I was unable to access the input option. The 990 would just skip over this option when moving the cursor. confused

I know I should have tinkered with this some more but I was heading out for Monday Night Football and after that it was just too late. It's probably just my impatience and ignorance but if someone could let me know what I am doing wrong here that would be great so can come home tonight and just fix it. I got my first Blue Ray movie waiting for me.

The tape input only allows analog input - I ran into that while tinkering around after the firmware update earlier this year. You could assign optical 4 to the Aux input or even Video5 (assuming that you don't plan to use the front input).

I will try to configure the PS3 on the AUX input (I prefer a 'clean look' so I will not use the front inputs). Thank you for the advice gonk!

Aux will work fine (mine currently uses an optical input for my Roku SoundBridge), but since you're like me and don't plan to use the front input you could also use Video5 if you need Aux for something else later. If I pick up a PS3 (which I may do next year), I'll probably run the HDMI and optical to my 990 and set Video5 up to use DVI2 and optical4 (or whatever optical input I connect it to). wink

One thing that really is a pain in the ass with the PS3 is you have to choose which output you are using in the menu. Either HDMI or component and toslink. It will not output both. It's a real pain in the ass to change it back and forth.

Let me know if I got that right:
If I use the HDMI output for the picture output I can NOT use the fiber optic cable in parallel to output sound to my 990?

This would really suck as you can not output 1080P through the component cables! That would mean you either have to sacrifice picture or sound quality.

Now the question is if I can route the HDMI into the TV and use the optical output form the TV to wire the sound signal to the 990?!

Another option might be to go HDMI out (PS3) to DVI in (990) and then DVI out (990) to HDMI in (TV) but I am not sure if the DVI input of the 990 is good for sound signal?!

This is getting more complicated than I thought. Thanks for all your help!

I looked at the manual, because I read vp8000's post the same way but felt that such a limitation would be a huge flaw in the PS3 - so much so that it would have already produced a major uproar online. In fact, there's no indication in the manual that the optical output is disabled under any conditions. Vp8000 seems to be talking about the fact that you have to pick between HDMI, component, or composite/s-video for the video output. Your plan should work fine.

By the way, the 990's DVI input is purely a video switching connection - DVI doesn't carry audio. You could use the 990's switching if you wanted to have a second DVI or HDMI source, but both sources would still need a separate audio connection to the 990.

Correct Gonk,
I am speaking of the video end. I had hooked up my PS3 to the 990 with component and optical. I also ran a HDMI line directly to the TV so I could use the PS3 without firing up my whole system. No good. You have to go into the PS3's menu and choose either HDMI or component.
