hate to sound like an idiot but i just switched over from the 970 to the 990 and i am having difficulty setting it up. i made all the connections as i had with my 970 turned everything on it defaulted to the tuner i was able to select cd and was able to get sound from my cd player. but when i hit menu on the remote or on the front panel i am not getting input config and cant make any adjustments. any ideas out there??

The 990's menu only appears on the OSD, so you'll need to have the TV on and set to a video input connected to one of the 990's analog video outputs (composite, s-video, or component) to get into the menus. This differs from the 970, which also displays the menus on the front panel display. Does that help at all?

The 990 will show its menu for a component video input, but it will not show the OSD "pop-up" note such as volume or active input.

Yep, it will show the setup menu over the component output. For component video inputs, it will replace the incoming video signal with a black background and project the menu onto that. For s-video and composite video inputs, it will overlay the menu on top of the incoming video signal before the signal is transcoded to component for the component video output.
