The 990's manual is pretty well written - if you don't have a copy handy, it's available in PDF format
here . If you don't have a remote control, I'd recommend calling Outlaw in the morning and getting a replacement shipped out.
Here's a quick run-through of what you need to do without the remote in the meanwhile. You've apparently found the MENU button on the front panel, which will get you into the 990's setup menu. That menu will be visible on any analog video monitor output (component, composite, or s-video). Since you're using component video from your DVD player and appear to have also run component video from the 990 to the TV (which was the right choice, by the way), set your TV to the component input that is connected to the 990. Press MENU on the front panel, then press the SELECT button (middle of the navigation buttons) to select the INPUT menu. Press SELECT again to get into the DVD input menu. Make sure that the audio input and video input match the inputs that the player is connected to (OPTICAL1 for audio and COMP-DVD for video). You might also want to double-check where you connected the optical cable on the rear of the 990 - the optical inputs are numbered
up from 1 to 4 and there is an optical output just below optical1.
To change inputs from the front panel, you will want to exit the menu (pressing MENU once should do the trick) and then press INPUT (just above TUNER). Immediately after pressing INPUT, use the up and down navigation buttons on the front panel to scroll through the inputs until DVD apperas. After a couple seconds, the 990 will switch to that input and give you both audio and video from that source.
