Somewhere I'm completely missing the boat....someone please help. I made sure I made all the changes in the 990 prior to changing my connections and I still cannot get video out of the 990 using DVI. I'm beyond frustrated so don't be afraid to be brutal....I have tough skin.

Here are my connections:

- Projector to Directv box - HMDI to HDMI
- Projector composite out to 990 Monitor In.
- Directv box audio out - optical to the 990 optical 1.
- DVD HDMI out to the 990 DVI-1 In.
- DVD Audio out optical to optical 2 of the 990.

Watching TV works great.
Music CD's works great. Opticals at work.
Put in a DVD....get audio only.

Go ahead and be blunt......I'm right there; I know it.

The DirecTV box is using the projector's HDMI input, which is why you aren't getting video from the 990's DVI output. The DirecTV and the DVD both need to run their HDMI through the 990, and the DVI output of the 990 needs to be connected to the projector.

Ahhhh....gotcha.....I knew it had to be something simple. I'm headed out to a xmas party but will definitely make the changes in the morning. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks once again Gonk..you're the man; even if this doesn't work. :-)

Gonk,

I have another question on the DVI, no sense raising another thread...as I'm sure it's been asked and answered.

If I use the component inputs of the 990, will it output video via the DVI connection? ie...xbox 360 via component to the 990, DVI from the 990 to an HDMI switcher, and then to the display...just trying to work a few things out.

Thanks

I'm not Gonk but the answer is no - the 990 doesn't convert analog video to digital or vice versa. All it ca do with the DVI connections is choose which DVI input to send to the DVI output.

Thanks psyprof. I didn't think it would, but I couldn't find the thread where I had originally read it.

Ok Gonk, after the changes here's where the system stands:

1. DVD Audio/Video - Great
2. HD Directv - No Audio/Video
3. Still have a slight hum coming from the sub.
- I'm going to try some cable management this week so let me do a sanity check. Cable management to the ignorant means separate the power cables from interconnects....neatly.....right? Will tying up the cables cause any degradation?

What's my next move? :-)

Basic cable management is exactly what you describe - keeping power cables away from interconnects and speaker cables (particularly on parallel runs; power and interconnect can cross at right angles and not give you problems). It's also not a bad idea to avoid bundling interconnects with speaker cables if you can avoid it. Tying cables up with string, zip ties, or velcro straps won't hurt them, assuming you aren't bundling interconnects and power cables of course.

So we've got audio and video working fine from the DVD, but we've lost audio and video from the DirecTV? I assume you've started using the 990's DVI switching, so that the DVD player has an HDMI-to-DVI cable and a coaxial or optical cable running to the 990 and a DVI cable is running to the projector? If so, you also need an HDMI-to-DVI cable and a coaxial or optical cable running from the DirecTV box to the 990, and you need to set up an input on the 990 to use that DVI input and digital audio input.

If you connected as Gonk suggested, I would check your video/audio input assignments via the 990's menu.

Your hum could be a ground loop, so you have some detective work ahead of you. If not already done, you can try plugging your gear so everything comes off the same breaker.

If none of the other speakers produce humm, I would also try swapping the subwoofer's cable to see if that's the culprit. Don't forget to unplug your sub when you do that (been there, done that).

Cable Mgmt - got it
Directv a/v out - I'm connected as mentioned. I'm also connected optical out of the Directv to the 990. Made the changes in the 990 (DVI-1 In for DTV , DVI-2 In for DVD and DVI Out to projector) and still nothing. Clueless!!

Pick an input (such as Video1) and make sure it is set for both DVI-1 and the optical input that you connected the DirecTV receiver to. Once you've done that, try switching to that input while the projector is set to the DVI input (if you're accessing the menu on the projector, it must be on a different input since the 990's menu isn't displayed on the DVI monitor output) - let us know if that does the trick or not.

Ok..did it and nothing. Since I'm HDMI out of the Directv box and DVI into the 990, there's no additional connection needed (i.e. component) from the cable box to the 990 is there.

That's really odd. Do you get audio but not video, or is there just nothing at all?

dah..you know what, I setup the spare Video input but didn't plug anything into it. That explains my frustration. I just hope this doesn't boil down to being a problem with the 990's DVI inputs. Let me give it another try and I'll be back.

Gonk, understand that connecting as mentioned means a component connection and not DVI. My projector outputs are HDMI In, S-Video In, PC In, Component 1 & 2 In & Video In. Am I missing what you're asking?

Ok, I figured out the correct configuration and still no audio or video. The 990 is showing "Digital" flashing in the front panel. Can this mean there's something wrong with the 990. Is there another way to make this connection to get a/v out of the cable box? I gotta get this working before Giants vs Cowboys game on xmas. :-)

If you've got the "Digital" indicator flashing, then you've either not got any digital audio output from your DirecTV box - the 990 is looking to the specified digital input (identified at the right end of the display, next to the input name) and finding no signal to lock on to. If there's also no video even though you have the input's video source set to DVI2, then either the DirecTV box is not outputting anything to the HDMI, there's a problem with the cable, or the projector is not on the correct (HDMI) input. What is the specific model number of the DirecTV box? I'd like to track down a manual for it online and see if there are any possible issues happening there...

ej, if this means anything, my RCA DirecTV tuner can only output either DVI or component video - not both. I have the DTC210 model. There's a tiny selector switch on the back of mine that had me scratching my head until I found it. That wouldn't have been funny during football season...

I just switched my DVD player to the DVI 1 In I was using for the Directv and got the same result. That tells me I have a problem with the DVI 1 In and should probably give Outlaw a ring. That said, I'm not going through the holiday without my HT so I think I'll return all connections back to using component until after the new year and maybe I'll have to send the 990 back.....Big Time Bummer!!!

Suggestions?

I couldn't find any obvious reason for the optical output to not be working, unless the cable was loose at one end or there was a protective cap still in place. One possible reason for the lack of video is an HDCP handshake issue - you might try setting the 990 to the correct input and cycling the projector off and back on (or leaving it off until you have the 990 on that input, then turning it on).

Yes Ron, I did. The end result was two things. I had a bad cable and HDCP was not consistent between the cable box, the projector and 990. I have to recycle the cable box every time I watch TV; which sucks, but it works.
