I think I know the answer to this question but just want to make sure. I have on order a set of B&W 802D's and HTM3S center. I will not be using any sub with these. The rears are B&W 650 In-Wall. I am going to try SUB None, 802 and HTM3 at 40Hz and the 650's at 50Hz. Does this sound right ?

Since you will not be using a sub, you must set the mains (those new 802D's) to "large" before you can set the sub to "off." Once this is done, the mains will ignore their crossover point (so it doesn't really matter what you set it to). If you do add a sub later, then 40Hz would probably be a good starting point for the 802D's, although I'd also experiment with 60Hz. I'd probably cross the HTM3S over at 60Hz (the -3dB point is 42Hz, so going up to 60Hz will make sure it starts to unload to the mains before it really starts to roll off). I'd also cross the rears over at 60Hz (-3dB point for them is 50Hz), and I might even tinker with an 80Hz crossover for them just to see how they sound that way.

I almost bought the 802's. Nice choice! Why the decision to go without a sub?

I love my music and most of the subs I have tried were either not good enough for the speakers or just the opposite too good for the speakers and over whelming. I will most likely end up with a sub someday, after much searching.I am not into the chest slamming lows or a big monkeys scream as much as other people.Just me I guess. I have two other friends that have these speakers and they don't use subs either. Sounds fine to us on both HT and 2 channel. You know the old saying to each his own ears.

I ran without a sub for a good long while. With good mains (and I'd say your 802's certainly qualify for that), you should be in pretty good shape. Effectively integrating a sub can be tricky, but bass management like what the 990 offers can help - if you ever decide to give it a try, it can be done.

I personally like some authority when a door slams in a movie or a guy gets punched. When not listening at reference levels, a sub can help create that environment. There are a few subs that are very accurate which integrate well with your speakers. Rel and Velodyne immediately come to mind. The rel subs didn't give me enough thunder but were AWESOME with music.
