I was thinking about getting a pair of Onix ref 1 monitors as my left and right channel speakers for music. I would take the extra orbs and put together a mod 4 center channel and mod 2 left and right surrounds. Would this be an ok setup for watching movies? I have the 990/7125 and orb super eight sub. Not sure if orb/onix would go together ok.

A mod4?????? I guess you will string 2 Mod2s together.

Mod1 = 8ohms
Mod2 = 4ohms

What happens when you put 2 Mod2s. I think you will trip the 7125!!!

The usual recommendation is to use "voice-matched" speakers for the LCR. If not, it is better to use the center channel "phantom" mode. The Ref1s are fantastic bookshelf speakers - they will easily handle the "phantom" center. Orb's for surround and back will work fine for movies (just cross them over at 150Hz - trust me on this one - their spec sheet happily leaves out the +-3db points - hate it when mfgs do that).

Two four-ohm loads wired in parallel would result in a two-ohm load. Two four-ohm loads wired in series would result in an eight-ohm load. Eight ohms is a better load for most amps, but two speakers in series would do away with most of the damping factor for both speakers. Many amps wouldn't 'like' a two-ohm load except for light duty use, but at least half of a high damping factor, if it exists in the first place, is preserved when loads are wired in parallel. Check with Outlaw regarding your amplifier before operating at a two-ohm load.

An alternative, while not that practical unless one plans for this from the beginning and has room to expand the budget a bit, would be to buy two 7075 amps, instead of just one amplifier with more WPC, and drive each speaker individually. In cases where two or four speakers need the same signal, use a ‘Y’ connector to feed two amplifier inputs with the same signal. This method preserves the ‘relationship’ between loudspeaker and output channel and would allow odd configurations, such as driving 3 loudspeakers with the same signal.

I agree with BB4TB - the 7125 would probably be happiest with a 4 to 8 ohm load, but it'd be good to talk with Outlaw before ruling out a 2 ohm load. Titleist also doesn't mention rear surrounds, and if he's only running a 5.1 setup he could split the center pre-amp output and use two amp channels to drive two Mod2's.

I don't have any rear surrounds. I could if I decided to stick with the Mod2 center channel and move the extras to the back for a 7.1 set up. By the way Mod 4 is 8 ohms. I was just looking for feedback on sound quality. I know you try to be consistent with yout left, right and center channel but that Onix center channel would have no where to go...much too big

If the Mod4 is a single speaker, then there's not an issue here - except of course your original question of how it matches up with the Onix speakers. I'll be curious to hear how it works if you get the Ref1's.

What gave me the idea was the B Stock Ref1's they have for 750.00..normally 1200.00. I have heard more good than bad about them. Seems like a good deal.
