After receiving my 990 last week, and what I thought was careful setup, I found the sound of my system lacking in bass and bright. I read several posts from others stating they thought the unit bright sounding so I chalked it up to a characteristic of the processor. A couple of days ago it ocurred to me that the low pass crossover of my subwoofer was still engaged so I disabled it allowing just the 990 to handle the crossover. Bass reappeared and the sense of brightness diminished (the 990 breaking in helped also). I attribute this to the phase shift reusulting from deactivating the sub crossover which minimized cancellation with the bass from my main speakers (Apogee dipoles).

As a possible future option for the 990 I would like to see a remote controllable sub phase adjustment to help easily determine the correct phase relationship with the main speakers.

Steve at Outlaw was very helpful when I set up my system. I don't have a way to bypass the crossover on my sub so he suggested I turn it to its highest crossover (approx 125Hz) setting. I have the 990's crossover for all speakers set at 80Hz so the subs low pass filter is out of the way at 125Hz. For the phase setting I played the same piece of music and adjusted the sub's phase switch to maximize the bass. By setting the subs filter and phase switch plus adjusting the 990's crossovers I too was able to get the bass I expected.

My crossover is set to 80 Hz in the 990 and in the Velodyne SMS-1 bass processor as well (48dB per octave in the latter!
It is the only way to prevent a very nasty +18dB 100 Hz room mode to leak through...
