I'll second Gonk's input here. I recently upgraded from the 950 to the 990. I was very happy with the 950. I expected some improvement. But I did not expect the difference it would make to be so dramatic. "More transparent" is a good description of the improvement I noticed in my system. I also found the soundstage to be bigger, and the imaging a bit more precise.
A worthwhile upgrade!

I feel the 990's bass management (with the firmware update) is a huge improvement, and if you have any old vinyl, it has a pretty decent phono section too. And speaking of huge, the 990 is.

I raised my hand too. I liked the 950 and like the 990 more. The front sound stage of 990 has more depth, but I have to turn the volumn 3 db more then the 950. Appears to me that it need a more powerful power amp with 990 than with 950. 200 rms per chanel would perfect. I have a 5x 200rmp rotel power amp with the 990 and a subwoofer of 15" cone, 500 watts. The match is great.

One addition to rance's message: there's also new vinyl. Yes, those 12" black disks with the teeny hole in the middle are still being made, and a lot of people who have compared them with CD versions of the same recording find themselves preferring the vinyl. Some people - like me - bought the 990 primarily to listen to music, with HT more of an occasional enjoyment. Maybe the rest of you are missing out on something. After all, stereotypes are only good for breaking.

I'm not, the phono stage is a great addtl feature I liked, so I can get out the old Thorens turntable (anybody besides psyprof1 remember those?). Don't do it often, but man with over 500 albums in the closet that 1/2 you can't find on cd, it sure is fun sometimes.

Thorens? To my AR XA (bought 44 years ago) that's a johnny-come-lately. I did however replace the arm with a Mayware unipivot.

I never had a 950. Got into outlaw gear late. Bought 990. Bought a 970 for second location in house. Sent it back. The 990 is amazing. You will not be sorry.

The sound quality that you get out of the 990 is excellent. you will be really happy with it. I've had several sony and yamaha AV receivers before I purchased my 990, and none of them can even compare to the 990.
