I am about to purchase an Outlaw 990. My thought is that if I get an upconverting DVD player and use an HDMI to DVI cable to get the video signal from the DVD player to the 990, and use an optical cable to get the audio from the DVD player to the 990. Does anyone know if this will work? The reason I ask, is that I'm not sure if using the HDMI output on the DVD player will defeat all of the other audio outputs, since the DVD player will likely assume that the HDMI cable will be carrying audio as well as video. If I can't bring audio out of the player separately over optical or coaxial, I'm pretty much out-of-luck with the 990. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bobby

This will work just fine - I'd estimate that 99% or more of the upconverting players with HDMI (like the OPPO 970, the Samsung players, the Panasonic players, and others) are set up in exactly this manner.

Thanks gonk. Looks like I'll be picking up the 990 in the next week or so.

That's how I set mine up (because I didn't know any better!) and it worked just fine. I've since come to realize that HDMI carries both audio and video.

HDMI can carry both audio and video, but (as my HDMI FAQ discusses) the capability isn't always fully implemented at both ends. Sources are generally pretty good about it, but displays typically can only accept PCM stereo inputs (because they don't have the chips to decode Dolby Digital and DTS) and many HDMI-equipped receivers provide HDMI solely for switching the video signal (no support for the audio stream).
