Back Surrounds, Not Side

I'm somehwat new to higher end HT and have a few questions maybe someone can help me with......
1-How do you turn on the unit with the remote? Selecting "TNR" and power doesn't work like it does with the other devices. You can turn it on by selecting a device from the lower set of inputs however.
2-Why is it that this receivers set-up won't allow for rear surround set-up without assuming you also have side surrounds?
3) While I'm in here does anyone know where I can find a code for a Direct TV PVR? It can't seem to find it when doing a 991 search for it.
I'm realy happy so far and have found this device to be much more intuitive than the Denon 3806 that's going back to the store soon. I've had my eye on this one from the day I saw it.
Thanks in advance for any info...

Quagh, you turn on the unit with the remote (if it's in TNR mode, to run the 990) simply by pushing one of the input buttons; e.g., AM/FM or DVD. The POWER button just turns the 990 off. Yes, it seems counter-intuitive at first because nothing else works that way. But when you get used to it, it's convenient because turn-on is combined with input selection - only one button to push.

Thanks Psy. Any idea why it's an all or nothing prop for the surrounds?

1. As psyprof1 pointed out, any of the input buttons will turn the 990 on. It's done to provide discrete on and off codes - hugely handy in creating macros on univeral remotes. For example, my MX-700 has a macro on the "POWER ON" button that turns on the TV, then turns on the cable box, then with one signal turns the 990 and and sets it to the cable input, then sends a signal to the TV to make sure it's on the correct input (a discrete code for the TV that sets it to component 2).
2. Many people who are used to a 5.1 setup get confused about side and rear surrounds. If you only have a 5.1 setup, your surrounds may be mounted more to the rear than to the side (although THX and Dolby still recommend the speakers be located on the side walls). That does not mean you will use the rear surround outputs. If you have a 5.1 setup, you will want to connect the surrounds to the side surround outputs.
3. That one I'm not so sure of. There are some other threads floating around, and I've heard about folks using a search command with a DirecTV box to find the right code.
Glad to hear that the 990's working out for you! It's been a piece of equipment that I've enjoyed for over a year now and that is clear enough to use that (with the help of my MX-700) my wife has no trouble using the system on her own.

Gonk,
Well the answer to the surrounds question would explain why the levels seemed lower than I expected! Thanks for clarifying that one for me. This would be one small detail that would be a great adder for the manual!
Appreciate the help.
PS, I was successful with the Direct TV PVR code after about 16 hits. I had to pause the unit with the Tivo remote and instead of hitting the power button and device button, used the play and device button.
