I am considering the 990 as a replacement for a Parasound AVC 2500. My question is does anyone here use a turntable with the 990. I will be using an Adcom GFA 7000 power amp and Klipsch Cornwall's when listening to vinyl. I am currently using an old JVC turntable with a NAD phono preamp. I will likely upgrade to a nrewer turntable once I get a new processor in place. Thanks for any help.

I use a Denon turntable with a Shure V15 Type III cartridge (the Denon is five years old; the Shure is 28! years old). The sound through the 990 is, in a word, outstanding. I had previously used a Creek phono preamp with another preamplifier, and the sound was not as musical. As well, the Sony TAE9000 also had a phono preamp, but again, the sound as I recall, was still not as good as with the 990.
ANOTHER reason to be extremely pleased with the 990!!

Phono input of 990 has very respectable performance out of turntable. I have two channel analog system different from my 990 setup (Musical Fidelity and Rega Planar 3), the vinyl sound from 990 is very close to this setup. The gain can be little higher but I have no problem reaching desired volume level. It is kind of rare to see phono input from surround sound pre/pro and on top of that 990 has very capable vinyl sound. I can easily live with 990 as only music system in the house. There are still many budget minded audiophile quality turntables out there like Regar, Music Hall, Pro-ject just to name a few. Good luck.

Do you guys have existing vinyl libraries or is it still possible to get recent / current releases on vinyl?

The folks with turntables can probably offer a better assortment of sources, but several online stores ( Elusive Disc is the name I'm most familiar with, but others such as Streetlight Records are also floating around) and some local shops still sell new and used vinyl recordings. Audiogon also has an area for selling used LP's.

I use the 990 with an inexpensive sony table, while it isn't audiophile grade, it is satisfactory and didn't cost $20,000 for the pair. (Phono stage preamplifier coupled with a high end turntable. A good source for all things vinyl is Todd The Vinyl Junkie. http://www.ttvj.com/index.php?main_page=index

The phono stage is one of the main reasons I chose the 990 and it works like a champ!

I have to admit I didn't expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the 990's phono. Low noise, plenty of headroom and some great sound.

990 and Klipsch Cornwalls here too. Old B&O 1800 turntable hooked up, for that odd occasion when I did out the old records. Been very happy with the results-

When I have my Phono playing on my 990, what is the best way and settings to get a phono output from my 990 so I can burn my albums to my recorder? I am trying to burn my albums (Bill Chase Jazz) from vinyl to my pioneer dvd recorder than I can playback the audio on my oppo 970. Yes is a weird way to copy the vinyl but I want to try it. I am just not sure how to get the audio output from the 990? thanks papabear

Looks like the thread has moved on beyond this area, but my phono gear is an AR XA (probably older than some of you reading this) with a Mayware unipivot arm holding a Grado Red cartridge. I bought the 990 because of its phono input and have been very pleased with its performance - better than the Adcom GTP500 it replaced. One improvement I didn't expect was that the slight hum the Grado had with the AR table on the Adcom (considered par for the course with Grados on AR tables) is gone on the 990. Now as to dubbing vinyl to DVD (or CD or cassettes, for that matter), what's wrong with running the 990's audio tape output to the DVD's input, as everybody used to do back in the pre-video days? I thought that was what such outputs were for. Or is it that with that connection the DVD recorder can't record anything else? Just wondering.

To follow up on phono output to dvd. I used both Video 1 record out and then used the tape out. Both ways worked just great. Psyprof1, yes I am old school and feel like tape out would be my the best output for Phone recording, but I must side with Gonk that the video1 record out will allow me to output both audio/video from multi sources. As we all know, we have way to many wires to change and flip around already. Hahah I may take a picture of the back of my system for a good laugh for you to see. What's funny is that years ago I designed catv systems and wired many headends, and every wire was perfectly organized. These days all I want is to get it plugged in and sit down to listed. Some day I will organize this rats nest but I keep finding myself flipping/flopping/changing wires around all the time. All in all the Phone/Vinyl to DVD worked great, and playback on the oppo 970 worked and sounded just great. I appreciate the help from both of you. thanks papabear

Glad it's good, Papabear. I'll have to try that hookup method when I get a video recorder. As for 990s with messy behinds, if I could see the back of mine I'd probably claim the world championship but, furtunately, I can't. I still think there ought to be a dimension, maybe called "functional depth", which would include both DVI and XLR cables of the thickness and pliability Outlaw sells, bent to the sharpest safe right angles, at the back of the unit. What then - 22"? 24"?
