Do you typically need to leave any space between the 990 and 7125 in a 19" rack, maybe 1U space? I have a middle atlantic slim5 rack that i'm building into the wall of my HT and I was curious how to position the units and therfore what length cables to purchase.
Will the Outlaw PCA 0.5M (set of seven) be long enough for experimentation?

I have my 990 sitting on top of my 7500 and have had no issues. Usually when I rack a system I will do a 1u space between the amp and preamp, but as long as your ventilation for your rack is done correctly, you should be able to set them on top of each other with no issues.
As for the cables, I either make my own, or use Audioquest or Monster, so I can't really comment on the Outlaw cables. @ .5m they should be fine if the units are stacked on top of each other.
Does Middle atlantic have a rack shelf and plate for the 990? I haven't checked with them, but that would be awesome as I am about to redo my system with a slim 5 as well. The slim 5 is such a smoking deal for a rack.

thanks, yes MA does make a custom rackshelf for the 990 but nothing listed for the 7125 yet. The list is here custom rackshelf page . The slim5 is great. I have a 68inch unit for my whole house audio and a 54inch for the HT. billmac

I'd probably leave a little space above your amp, just to be on the safe side. As for cable length, in my setup I use 0.5-meter PCA's between my universal player and my 990 - they barely reach, and that's with minimal lateral travel (the Yamaha's output is only a couple inches over from the 990's multichannel input). I'd be a little leery of being able to reach every channel of a multichannel amp with the 0.5-meter cables - the 990's pre-amp outputs are about a quarter of the way across the rear panel (3" or 4" over from one edge), while the amp's inputs are spread all the way across the rear. Most channels would probably work fine, but the channels farthest away are going to be nearly a foot away before you factor in travel down from one unit to the other and length used up in bends. Somebody who's tried it could give you a better idea - my Model 750 is too far away to make it an option anyway and my Model 200's are even farther away, so I haven't tried it. You might mix it up a bit, use five 0.5-meter and two 1.2-meter cables?

I have my 990 over a 7100 amp with about 3" between. The 0.5m PCA's (7 channels) reach fine, but do not allow much leeway. If you are thinking of experimenting with your configuration and moving things around, skip the 0.5's.
