If 990 is set to default to dolby digital in the 990 OSD, will it automatically switchover to DTS when DTS DVD is played? Last night I put in a backed-up Scarface DVD, where I extracted the DTS audio file only + video files of course.

The 990 came up in DD mode as usual, I could hear audio, but no "DTS" label appeared on the 990 LED window. I had to press DTS button manually, then it swithed over. DTS NEO etc logo appeared

Is this normal procedure?

Thanks Vince

I don't own a 990, but my old 1050 only had auto-detect and switched automatically to the inputed signal. If you select the DVD to play DTS, I'd think no DD signal is outputed? If no DD/DTS is detected, does the 990 switch to PL II/NEO:6?

My current receiver let's you select the mode for the inputs, which I set to "Auto". Does the 990 have an "Auto-detect" setting?

Oops...just noticed you said "DTS NEO" appeared. That is not a digitally discrete signal, but rather a matrixed surround similar to PL II. I suspect the DD soundtrack is playing normally, and switching to DTS manually engaged the NEO:6 mode derived from a 2-channel signal.

Any surround processor must be able to automatically detect and switch to DTS when presented with a DTS signal, just as they must be able to engage Dolby Digital decoding for a Dolby Digital source. This is true of the 990 as well as any other DD/DTS processor or receiver.

The behavior you describe for the Scarface DVD suggests that the audio was Dolby Digital and not DTS - as Cadboy points out, NEO:6 is a matrix decoding mode. Originally NEO:6 could only work with PCM stereo sources, but I think the generation included on the 990 supports at least Dolby 2.0 - it may even be able to generate a surround back signal from Dolby 5.1 sources.

Really stupid question, but you are using a digital cable (coax or optical) between your DVD player and the 990 correct?

(i.e. you are not using a standard red/white audio cable between your DVD and the 990)

I just wonder if it is actually getting a digital signal based on what you are describing.

For DVD audio I'm running Optical toslink to the 990. Component video straght to the TV.

When I hit DTS button, it was actually on the MX-700 remote with learned functions from one of the guy's in Gonk's remote file library.

I used Clone DVD to backup scarface dvd. Maybe I selected the DD audio file by chance instead of DTS??

If you press DTS button when a DD DVD is playing what happens? "silence", "hollow sound" ????

I will experiment some more and report back....

Thanks Vince

If you press the DTS button while a DD track is playing, the 990 will either ignore the command (leaving it in DD) or select from the one DTS processing mode that can be used in conjunction with the DD source (NEO:6). According to the 990's manual, NEO:6 is still only compatible with stereo sources (suggesting that the audio on your Scarface backup was either Dolby 2.0 or PCM stereo); I haven't ever tried turning it on with a Dolby 5.1 source to see what it does, so I don't know if it also works then. It may, since DTS has started asking manufacturers to phase out DTS-ES Matrix (the ES mode used with regular DTS 5.1 tracks to generate surround backs) and using NEO:6 for that - a change that is basically one of semantics, since the ES matrix decoding actually used the same matrix decoding as NEO:6.

I watched War Of the Worlds last night.. and i choose the DTS soundtrack. and the 990 picked the right one.. i then switched to the DD track on the movie. and it sounded really, really bad.

DTS sounded miles above the DD track.
