Hello,

This is my first post after lurking for some time. My question is in relation to the 990. I am setting up a home theatre and have selected B&W 602 fronts, 601 rears, LCR 60 centre, and 650 sub as my speaker set up. Has anyone used B&W with outlaw and are you satisfied with the pairing? Secondly my room size is 17 X 13. Is the 990 more than I need for my speaker selection and room size? I'm probably 50/50 movies to music.

Thanks in advance for any input

This thread has some good system summaries, including a number of B&W users. I can't imagine any problem with pairing the 990 with B&W's. Probably the better question is what amp are you planning to use? The 7125 and 7500 would probably both be reasonable options with those speakers and that room size.

B&W makes fairly easy to drive speakers. With your room size you could easily do well with the 7125.

The LCR 60 is very light in comparison to the 602's, which are have a lot of slam for a bookshelf speaker (even if they fit, don’t put them on bookshelves, use stands). The drivers don't compare well. I would recommend at the very least the LCR 600.

The role of the center channel is somewhat different, usually having a lot of dialog/vocals (midrange @ 500-2000Hz). The design of the upper range B&W center channel speakers have the tweeter and midrange aligned vertically, providing a more focused location which is important here. I started with the LCR600 and was relatively happy until I tested the HTM7 which was significantly superior, before ending up with a used HTM3 purchased on eBay. I have B&W’s all around, and am very happy pairing them with Outlaw equipment.

Good listening... smile

Thanks for your suggestions.
It's good to know the 7125 will provide enough power for my setup (cheaper too).
I am planning to get the LCR600 as my centre once my project is complete. Originally had the 601's as my fronts and that's when I bought the LCR60 based on salesman's suggestion. One other question, if I move to a 7.1 system would I be better off with another set of bookshelves or in ceiling speakers as rear surrounds? In ceiling might be easier based on my space.

I have B&W 603 (series 1) for my front, CC6 S2 center, and DS6 (series 1) for side surrounds.
No rear surrounds yet.
I've used a Outlaw 950 and Adcom amp for a while.
I just sold them and plan to get the 990/7125/LFM-1 combo.

I used 601 for front and CC6 for center when I first purchased the 990. They were a good match for the pre/pro. But then I knew I was missing something and the answer was Swan 5.1 speakers... I could not believe how much of a difference it made from moving from 601 bookshelf to floor standing speakers.

I love how B&W speakers sound and wanted something close to it and Swan speakers gave me that with better soundstage and imaging (moving from old B&W 601). At least to my ears.

Have fun and enjoy the 990 and 602. It should be a good combination.

Hi,
I have the 990/7125 combo powering 8 year old+ DM602's up front, CC6 Center & DM302's in the rear. My room is similar in size to yours (mine is 19 x 13).

The 990/7125 has more than enough power to drive the B&W's...and it sounds awesome in both HT and stereo mode.

To your original question..."Is the 990 more than I need for my speaker selection and room size?"

Absolutely not! Get the 990/7125 combo and enjoy!

I'm using B&W DM604S3 for my mains, an LCR600 for center, DM302's for surrounds, and an older pair of Polks pulling rear surround duties. I have a 990 for my pre and I'm using a Rotel RMB1075 to power all my B&W's. All in all I'm VERY pleased with the way it sounds. See my signature for the rest of my gear if you're interested.....

cheers,
simp
