So I was watching a DVD in Dolby Digital. Just for the heck of it I decided to press "stereo" on the remote. It flipped to 2-channel downmix which made since. I pushed it again and it flipped to "upsample", yet sound was coming out of the surrounds. How can you press the "stereo" button and make the surrounds active?
Is this a firmware bug?

Just seemed odd.

That is curious. Was it a surround mix? If so, I wonder if upsample didn't override the downmix and revert to the native signal?

Yes, it was a surround mix. It was a Dolby Digital 5.1. Just bizarre that pushing the stereo button made it turn all the channels back on (while showing UPSAMPLE on the OSD).

I have had the 990 lose the front L/R channels when going from a 2-channel mode to a multi-channel mode on the same input. I have never experienced waht you are describing though. I got around the issue of the L/R dropping out by connecting the optical cable to the DVD input and the coax cable to the CD input (both from the DVD player as I use it for movies and CDs). Then I set the CD input to default to upsample and the DVD input to default to DPL2X.

Come to think of it, I don't even think I have tried doing what you described. Any time I use upsample, it has always been with a 2-channel source. I will try with a 5.1 disc and get back to you tonight.

jrlouie,

Let me know what part of Missouri you're in, we could be fairly close and I am just a few miles from Missouri.

I've got my DVD input set for "Upsample". It actually upsamples the two front channels to 192kHz while keeping whatever mode is being fed to it digitally.

So I've got 5.1 for my DVD's because my DVD player is set for "RAW" and since my 990 is set for Upsample it upsamples the two front channels.

I'd leave it set at Upsample. The 990 will automatically pick the mode that is required.

I'm going to have to experiment with that a bit - hadn't realized that you could apply upsample to a surround source like this. It's worth noting that you aren't able to apply a processing mode like Pro Logic IIx in this case, which means that folks with a 7.1 speaker setup aren't going to be getting much use out of those rear surrounds.
