Hey Gonk,

Been out of town for a few days and just this morning got to play around with the SW 2Ch offset
to fix the 2 Ch audio bass issue.

While doing this I developed a curious issue...

After playing with the Xover settings, settings on my SW, and 990's 2Ch offset. I couldn't get it to sound quite right so i decided to do a new system auto set-up.

After the 990 went thru its paces...it displayed a message that the rear speakers are large and I should switch them with the fronts and start over.

I have all speakers set as small.
Front R&L Xover at 60Hz, Center @ 80Hz, Rear R&L @ 80 Hz. SW is on.

I tried the Auto-set-up 3 times...same result.
Any ideas?

I vote Gonk should get free Outlaw gear for the rest of his life. He is the unpaid technical support for this company.

As far as your question goes, I would say half the people find auto calibration doesn't really work that well. You may be better off buying a SPL meter and doing it manually.

Thanks for the response.
I think I'll spring for the Radio Shack SPL meter.

Gonk: Sorry if I am abusing you & your enthusiasm to help us.

I've had the same results with the Auto set-up. I went through it, double checked the distances with a tape meausure, and found the distances to be pretty accurate. I calibrated the settings with my SPL and reset the speaker settings and crossovers manually.

Sorry if I made it sound like I thought you were abusing him. Gonk is the man around here. He is going to help you regardless because he is just a good guy. I was just telling Outlaw he should be compensated. I doubt he would agree with that, but I do. laugh

Gonk should at least get to beta test if he wants to do it. Then, if it's good outlaw should do as suggested above.

So GONK gets my vote.
Of course don't forget Scott & Steve.
They are always helpful, too.
Just that gonk isn't in the employ of outlawaudio.

I learned about Outlaw from the Polk Audio forums in December when I was researching speakers. Since then I have been reading the Outlaw Saloon. I would say that Gonk is about 85-90% of the reason that I purchased the system. Reading posts from an owner that loves what he has and is willing to share his experience with others (in depth) and help other owners really helped me to purchase the Outlaw equipment.

Unfortunately for us, I doubt Gonk would be very helpful after a few hundred beers. laugh

But I would still buy him one.

Hey there, fellas - been out of town for about a day and a half, so I've just come across this thread.

Petey - I've seen a few folks who ran into your problem initially that were able to resolve it by elevating the microphone to a position closer to ear level. I ran my auto-calibration with the mic screwed onto a cheap camera tripod and sitting in the central listening position. That put the mic at (or just a hair above) my ear level. This doesn't eliminate the "large rears" for everyone, but it does work in some cases. As I was telling a co-worker Friday, though, I'll still always run through the test tones manually with a meter and set my crossovers manually. Even if I had something in par with the MC-12's auto-setup/auto-eq monster (four expensive mics and an internal hardware update that costs about $3000), I'd probably still take at least one pass with the SPL meter just out of curiousity. smile

Everybody else - thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate them. Home theater has been a fun hobby for me, and hanging out here is part of that fun. I'll pass on the few hundred beers - alcohol poisoning would probably hinder my ability to post. wink

Gonk,
Thanks for the feedback.

I second the many comments above. Your informative posts definitely helped me with my decision to go with the 990/7125 combo.

I got mine out of the drawer, thinking I'd unravel it and measure it, but I think I'll just sum it up this way - it's really long (in the 15' to 20' range, I'd guess).
