Hi all,

I was wondering how well the 990 handles s-video to component transcoding. I understand that transcoding from composite is not very good.

Just got my 990 and plugged my cable box's component and s-video outputs into it. The 990 is connected via component to a Panny plasma. The s-video picture looks a little washed-out and yellowish compared to component. Of course, maybe the cable box has bad s-video output in the first place and the problem is not due to transcoding at all.

I'll be doing more testing but would like to hear others' experiences.

Thanks in advance.

Looks great on my 92" screen. I can discern no real difference between component and S-video converted to component.

I don't have many s-video sources (my SMS-1 is the only one that is permanently connected, although I've got an S-VHS VCR that is normally connected to an input on my DVD-R), but the times I've used the transcoding it has been exactly the same as a direct s-video connection from that source.

Thanks for the responses. I currently don't have a long enough s-video cable to connect my cable box directly to the plasma so I can't confirm whether the signal is bad coming out of the box or if it's the transcoding. Anyway, it's good to know that the problems that affect composite-to-component transcoding don't necessarily apply to s-video-to-component.
