The topology looks very condusive to upgrades. The back of the unit has a card slot configuration!

What would you upgrade? It already sounds very very neutral (in a good way).

There does seem to be a lot of empty space in there.

Maybe all that empty space is where Sherwood put their amps in their R-965. I imagine the 990 and the Sherwoods (R-965 and P-965) use the same chassis.

Yes,the Sherwood/Boston avr's are basically the same box and the large heat sinks are on the far left and right from front to rear.They have a monster power supply for avr's and the box looks full in the avr version.That said for some reason they sound NOTHING like the 990,even as prepros.I was amazed how poor these avr's sound,plenty power,great build,sound was congested and almost unlistenable.Any HK/DENON etc would be superior in all but the build/power,ALL imo.
