Thanks for that clarification. I will go read the threads you indicated.
I was wondering whether in their effort to make bass management "simple", the designers have actually made the situation worse. I could swallow the "simple" argument for $500 5.1 systems, but for more expensive separate component equipment perhaps a different approach is warranted.
I was thinking that it would be clearer if either the speaker settings and/or the bass management setting could be configured on a per-input basis. I think this would better accommodate my expectations, and make the situation clearer as to what the 990 is actually doing.
Right now there are implicit rules with respect to the speaker settings, bass management, and which input you currently have selected. This makes it hard to figure out what is happening, and how to configure the 990 to match your wishes.
For example, one way to implement this idea would be to allow subwooofer bass to be configured as managed/fullrange/none on a per-input (eg analog CD, optical DVD, etc) basis.
A more complex alternative would be to allow both the speaker setting (large, small, etc), cross over settings and bass settings.
What do you think?
