Ok this will probably sound like a stupid question but I am just a little confused on the corssover setting on the 990 and how they work. I know that the 990 provides crossover settings for the fronts, center, sides , and back but why isn't there a crossover setting for the LFE(Sub) its self? Is it really needed? The reason I am asking is because on some more expensive processors like the AVM 30 and the newer Denon receivers they have a separate crossover setting for the Sub its self along with the other speakers. How does the 990 handle the LFE for the sub?

Thanks

The sub ends up with the LFE information and the information that is redirected from the other channels set as small at the crossover point for each group of speakers.

To offer a crossover for the sub would be redundant. Crossover is the frequency at which the sub takes over for the mains.

I used to own an HK AVR435 that had this capability. It seemed a bit odd to me, but here's the explaination from their manual:
Quote:
When any needed adjustments are made to the crossovers, one additional adjustment is available to custom tailor the way information is sent to the subwoofer.

The LFE LP FLT line adjusts the frequency cutoff of the low pass filter that determines the frequency at which information is sent to the subwoofer when playing a digital soundtrack that has a dedicated low frequency effects channel. In most cases the default frequency of 120Hz is appropriate, since that is the frequency most commonly used in the creation of LFE channels during a movie’s sound mixing process. However, you may wish to change the setting based on your individual preference or the characteristics and capabilities of your subwoofer.

Thanks for the replies.

Ok now that clears it up for me smile . So for the LFE channel if i wanted to cut it off at 80Hz I would have to use the crossover built in on my sub?

Thanks

Would you be cutting the sub off at 80Hz (meaning nothing above 80Hz) across the board? As in, not even LFE track (the .1 in 5.1) above 80Hz? That's the only reason I'd see to use the sub's crossover downstream of a processor like the 990, and it would mean simply discarding the top portion of the LFE track.

I was thiking of using the 990 to set the crossovers for the other speakers but the higest crossover on the 990 would be 80HZ, and since the 990 doesn't have a separate crossover for the LFE channel its self use the subs built in to cut it off at 80Hz. Is this a bad idea? i was always under the impression that a sub works harder if the crossover is higher and has to cover a larger range than if it had a lower one (that it will work harder reaching the lower frequencies). Is this true or false? How do you fellow Outlaw owners set up your crossovers? do you use the built in one on your sub at all?

Thanks

I have my sub crossover disabled. The highest crossover setting on the speakers is 80Hz, which means that the sub is getting material from 80Hz on down (so an 80Hz low pass on the sub is unnecessary). The sub also gets the LFE track, which goes nowhere else and is intended for reproduction by a subwoofer.

If you add a second crossover at the sub, you have a couple potential problems. One is different crossovers at the same point interacting poorly (since crossovers are not brick walls but are actually slopes) - if the 990's crossover and a separate crossover are close (or especially if they are at the same point) you will have a dip in output. Another is that a crossover at the sub will cut out some of the LFE track - and that track isn't going to any other speaker, so that information is simply lost.
