I'm about to press the order button on a 990/770 combo... but have this last question:

Does the 990 allow for crossing from digital to analog? Namely? I have a DVD player that has HDMI output (which I'll use a HDMI-to-DVI adapter for the 990), but my plasma (samsung PPM50H2) only has component YPrPc.

Normally I'd be fine but I'd like to try the upconversion capability of the player (w/o resorting to some sort of HDCP hack to enable upconversion to 1080i via component).

Would the 990 do this? Or am I asking for too much?

The 990 cannot do this, I'm afraid. A few products are beginning to appear that will transcode from component to DVI/HDMI, but I haven't seen anything aside from some specialized standalone hardware that allows DVI/HDMI video to be converted to component. In light of the recent copy protection efforts that appear to be part of HD-DVD (and likely in Blu-Ray as well), it is likely to remain this way.

I've decided to just go with my taiwan-made DVD player... HDCP free and allows for scaling via component.

Not as good as digital, I know, but that'll do for now.
