It seems that you can get DVI output or S-video output, but if you select DVI input for a channel, the S-Video output is blanked even if you also have an S-video input hooked up for that channel like the manual suggests. I find the manual very misleading on this point. In fact, the manual implies that it will work.

This is a problem because I want to tape HD-TV shows with my VCR but I have my HD-TV input set to DVI for my projector.

If anyone knows how to make this work, I would be greatful. The manual implies that this will work, but having a unit, I can't get it to work. I know I have things hooked up correctly because if I configure the Video to S-Video, it works -- but the DVI is now left connected to wherever it was connected to last.

The DVI switching section of the 990 switches between DVI connections only. It will not transcode the signal to other outputs. If you input DVI the 990 will only output on DVI out. Refer to the "Connecting Video Components" section on page 20 of the manual.

I don't think this is an software upgrade type fix. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the video switching for DVI is isolated from any of the other video input/outputs. ie, there's no physical connectivity to the other outputs.

I thought the question was having both active, not converting between the 2. If they are so separate, there shouldn't be an issue to have both running.

Perhaps you could run the output through the Zone 2 output as a workaround if you don't use that already.

It is available, just not at the monitor out. The monitor out signal is determined by the video type selection in the input configuration menu. However, if you also have an S-video connection going into the 990, that signal will be available at the S-video REC Out.

The unit is definately capable of working the way I want. It can be fixed in software.

Here is proof: Let's say I want HDTV with DVI-2 and S-Video outputs. I select HDTV and go into configure, select DVI-2 and exit configure. Then go back into configure and select S-video and exit configure, the unit is now configured with both DVI and S-video outputs active and set to the correct device. The problem is that if you now select DVD, which we will assume selects DVI-1, the DVI output will stay set to the DVD then next time you select HD-TV and you have to go do this configure stuff again.

I look forward to a fix. After thinking of various complex menu fixes I have a simple suggestion. Just leave the S-Video inputs active when in DVI or Component. If someone really needs composite inputs, they can use a $5 composite to S-video adaptor. This is a comprimise suggestion but solves my problem. Certainly better than blanking the outputs.

Let me see if I can understand the problem (been away from the computer most of the day, and will be for the next few probably).

You want to record the active video source, and that source is set to DVI. Your recorder (connected to Video1's s-video record out) does not get a video signal. Is that correct? If so, what other video cables are connected to the active video source? Do you have an s-video cable in addition to the DVI?

I had two problems. One is solved.

1) The VCR record return does not transpose but otherwise will work even if the input to be taped is set to DVI. My confusion was that I had an S-Video input and Composite to the VCR. I now use an S-Video (and a external transformer to get composite) to feed the VCR and now that works. This is solved.

2) I want to be able to watch inputs (DVD for example) on my TV in S-Video or on my projector in DVI. I understand that there is no transposing but just want the S-video output to connect to the S-Video input even when DVI is selected. I can get this to happen with a complex set of configurations described above so I know the hardware can do it, but I shouldn't have to reconfigure the unit in everyday use. This should be a simple software fix. The 990 turns off the S-Video outputs when DVI is selected. This is not solved.
