UPS-brownout protection? Ques

I'm considering a UPS to protect against brownouts. Been told Monster/Panamax and others are just for surges and filtering.
Considering (because I like the convenience) a 19 inch rackmount version [APC].
I would be grateful for any input (pun not intended) about advisability considering proximity to audio equipment in the rack. Like: is it a problem? Induce hum?
If one of you gunslingers/desperados or outlaws has done this, please comment. All opinions valued. Thanks.

I've used a non rack unit for years with no noise problems at all. Nice to know when there is this problem the battaries kick in for the extra juice needed. Last summer here in Ottawa curtain area's also had higher than normal voltage(135) for a couple of days which this unit also warned of and corrected the problem. hope this helped abit.

Thanks Owl & Butch. Would like to ask Butch what brand/model/wattage or whatever he used.
And do you fellas also use a Panamax or Monster or some brand of surge protection. My guess is that the UPS doesn't handle that problem. Thanks in advance.

I have been using 2 APC smartUPS 1400's. Although right now I have been only using one of them. I have had lots of power hungry units hooked up to them with no problem. My last upgrade before the 990 was a Bryston 6B, I spoke with Bryston about hooking there units to a UPS and the told me since the unit has a 20 yr warranty plug it right into the wall. So the 6B is on its seperate breaker. My 4B is plugged into the UPS as well as everything else with no problems or any noise at all. As for protecting your electronics I don't think you can go wrong with APC, after all its what they know best. It protects against surges, high and low voltages, and shows you on the front of the unit if there is a problem (with and option of also an audible warning) hope this helps

If you can find a UPS that will support running all connected equipment [they have wattage capacities usually printed on them, if not in the model #], do so. UPS systems, as Butch notes, protect well in most ways, especially voltage regulation.
The downside is, they're often expensive for the units capable of handling amps and projectors [wattage, as above]. Moreover, most [except very pricey units] don't have sequential on/off for your equipment, and don't protect secondary strike sources [cable, phone]. If you're OK with this, the unit you're looking at ought to serve well.

Sluggo (Greg): Points well taken. Strikes/surges are not protected against. Maybe surges, but don't know. Perhaps the ideal situation is UPS and a PANAMX or a whatever. Your opinion appreciated. Thanks

I'm not at home so I can't look right now, but I think I've also got the SmartUPS from APC but Butch's are a little bit bigger than mine. When I finally upgrade my 1050 to separates and get a display I'm worried about enough to put it on the UPS, I'll definitely have to add another to my system. But Butch is right, these units do protect against over/under voltage and surges.

If you're looking to spend some serious coin (over $1K), APC now offers a line of HT-specific units with all of the features of line conditioners coupled with battery backup. Panamax & Monster also offer battery backup, but only as a separate unit from their LC units.
